I think it was like this back in the 70s
Show me a Scotchman
Who doesn't love a thistle
Show me an Englishman
Who doesn't love a rose
Show me a true-heart
A Son of dear old Marshall
Who doesn't love the Green and White, Hey!
M-A-R-S-H-A-L-L or M-A-R-S-H-A-Give them Hell!
Fight On, Fight On For Marshall U!
Back in the early to mid 60s, Woody, the cheer at Herd games that, by far, drew the biggest and loudest participation in the student section, at least, was: "Rip em up, tear em up, GIVE EM HELL, MARSHALL!"
Over time as the team successes, i.e., wins, diminished, especially in football, the cheer was often modified to: "Rip em up, tear em up, HELL, GIVE EM MARSHALL!" Also, word was that some of the blue hairs among the movers and shakers in Huntington persuaded the then school administration to quash such disgusting vulgarities at Herd sporting events!!
