Yurachek's patience pays off with 3 TDs

CINCINNATI — Tight end Ryan Yurachek caught three touchdown passes in Marshall’s 38-21 win Saturday night over Cincinnati, and he and quarterback Chase Litton made them look easy.

The yardages were 14, 15 and 31 yards. Two came immediately after the Thundering Herd forced a turnover in the Bearcats’ territory, and one came on a very well-executed fake pitchout.

Litton had pitched a time or two to that point, and even kept it once for a 5-yard gain. The Herd had trouble running at times, but the Bearcats had to honor the ground game.

But when Litton pulled the ball back on a pitch and passed to a wide-open Yurachek, the Bearcats were roasted.

“It was really good,” Yurachek said of the fake. “Shoot, I haven’t seen it, but I know it was really good the way the safety came down. The first thing [Litton] said when we came to the sidelines was, ‘Wait ’til you see my fake.’”

As it turns out, the Herd installed that play earlier in the week.

“It’s funny, because we were in practice and I hated that play,” Litton said. “I despised it, me and [co-offensive coordinator Todd] Goebbel were kind of going at it about that play, because I was so scared about that ‘Mike’ [middle linebacker], if that ‘Mike’ was going to play it a certain way, because they wanted Chek to bend [the route].

“The ‘Mike’ being in the throwing lane, it was iffy. Believe it or not, we had it called earlier in the game and we got a ‘one-high shell,’ [defensive look] and I was not having it. I was not about to sit there and waste a play we’ve been working on. We finally got [the look we wanted], we executed and I’m beyond proud of Ryan Yurachek.”

  • Sounds like Goebbels influence is a positive effect on our offensive output.  Perhaps he is even the source of the surprising plays.  We'll never know, but I'll take it either way.

  • I remember a few years ago in Akron me and Big City taken note of 85. No names on jerseys and we were like, "who is that guy?" as he continued to get open and reel in passes. Then he fell off the radar for a couple years primarily blocking. Glad to see he's back in the game plan and got his catches and TDs. He's a playmaker and game changer and needs to get his touches every game.
