  • So how long do give a coach to "build" a program? Just curious as to when results like postseason play matter? Does getting to a Conf championship game and not going to a postseason tourney suffice? Not because my a jerk just would like that hear people's definition of a successful program.

If Danny was building a resume' he could have gone for a quick fix, win in 2 years and go out the door. He is NOT building a resume' He is building a foundation for a sturdy, lasting successful program. He loves Marshall and as he has told us many times, sometime in the future he wants to sit on the sidelines like us and watch Herd hoops win.
Each team he has had has been stronger and more talented than the one before. I, of course, hope we get to the dance this year. I do believe that with everyone returning next year, except Milan, we will be loaded. Take all the returners and add in Iran, MUrphy and the guys he will sign in the next class and it will be deep and talented.
Today, I consider myself, the luckiest man on the face of the earth..

  • I agree 100% Herdmeister.  If a couple of the young guys come on strong it could happen this year. But next year is when we won't just be really good, but LOADED!!!! I wouldn't care to play anyone in the nation next year. We won't have a weakness. Jon and CJ will probably both be 1st team all conference next year. West and Watson will have a year under their belt. And Peneva and Williams will be really hitting their stride. I look for Peneva to have a big year this year but a monster year next year. His body is really developed since he 1st got here. He is 6'10" and has 7' length. Bledsoe is getting so much better. And Bennett will be a force down low. We will have guards that can play with anyone. We will have bigs that can play with anyone. We will have depth and the whole package. We usually come up short on one of those at Marshall. Not next year.

  • Big fan of Jon Elmore. Great to hear. Think the kid is ultra talented. Love the 304boys and SteveNash 2.0 nicknames. Heard DD say on radio that his brother Ot has been the pleasant surprise of preseason practice. Can any of you who attend practice explain. Heard he could shoot Loop-like?

DD has worked with Ot Elmore on his catch and shot (a.k.a. Loop), instead of dribble shot -   Also working A LOT with his defense as he plays soft and not very quick.  They are working hard everyday...........

  • Ill tell you what guys. Instead of me giving you basketball reports so you can say we said this and that last year. Or jon may do this or peneva may do that. Just come to practice and see for yourself and ask the questions you are raising. Think i havent? Nothing is guaranteed but you can ask and you can get a pretty good idea who is coming back and who might not. Obviously you think us that go to practice make stuff up or hype. Like we have said before, you can get all your questions answered at practice and you wont have to depend on second hand info. Hope to see you there.

Herdorbust, no one is saying that the practice reports are not welcomed and appreciated.

However, you apparently are unaware of certain facts.  (1)  Not everyone on these boards live 5 minutes from the Cam, which you and some others apparently do.

    (2)  It is approaching mid October which means right now that about 320 Division One Basketball teams in America are "undefeated".  (3)  And in all 320 of those camps there are probably fans who attend practices religiously and then post on their teams' fans sites that "these x players are playing lights out and look like all Americans and the coaching staffs are doing a great amount of teaching".  Just the way it is this time in the preseason: "hope springs eternal" . . .everywhere!!

  • So coalherd you say every fan of other teams are saying the same thing. So what you are saying is me and others attending practice are hyping the team? That is what you are saying because we are just a fan and blinded by our loyalty to Marshall. I think I have a much better clue about where Danny is taking this program than you do. And I also said I realize a lot can't get to practice. But for you to make assumptions and pretend to know more than those that are there watching, listening and actually know what's going on is nuts. Let me know if we were hyping the team after the 2018-2019 season, OK?

  • As I read these various threads I keep coming across references to Ot Elmore.

I swear I thought late last year or over the summer it was announced Ot would be leaving the BB team, but stay in school for another year. Now I keep stumbling across the references to him practicing.

What gives? Am I imagining things or has something in Ot's plans changed or what.? Just trying to keep things straight, not trying to start any arguments here.

My understanding is Ot left the team and was looking to play at a smaller school, and it did not work out.  He ask to come back and Danny agreed to let him.  I have been to several practices and Ot is working really hard - will that open into playing time (not sure)  - I believe it will determine on how he can handle his defensive ability....... He can still shoot very well, however he needs to catch and shoot like Loop did,  not dribble shot................   JMO

No, not saying that your reports are necessarily hyping the team.  Sure you are reporting accurately what you see.  Just remember the same thing is going on at all other D1 schools at this time of the year.  And when you are watching these practices remember that Herd players are playing against each other; not real competition.  That fact should have been abundantly clear in the one preseason game a couple seasons ago when the Herd lost to mighty Newberry!  Practice performance can mean only so much; when ball is tossed up against another team is when we can see what is really going on.  And I hope you are right about the 2018-19 season.  Really hope this season is better overall than the last three also!

  • Well I think i'm smart enough to compare practices from last year, the year before that, etc....I also know if the practices are much faster, about the same or slower than in the past. I also can see if Jon and CJ have stepped it up from this time last year. I can also see that Peneva and Bledsoe along with Milovic are far ahead of where they were last year. I can also see that West is a major addition defensively and even a leadership role. And I also have no doubt about what i'm saying about the 2018-2019 season. Those are just facts that I can see with my own eyes compared to last year.
