  • End zone to end zone. We have a pretty good punter, ya think? If that's not on Sports Center....Amazing thing to see.

  • That was a nice punt to watch for sure. If we could only find a kicker. He shouldn't be doing all 3 imo. We havent had a decent kicker since Haig.

  • That almost seems impossible. Standing in your own endzone and kicking into the other :o

You're right it should be a top 10 play. That was a hell of a punt, I've never seen that happen on any football level, college, pro, high school, etc..

  • And it was nearly downed inside the one!!!.

Whose record did he beat? John Arnold's?

  • Cotton said it was a Marshall AND CUSA record.  I'm more interested in whose record it didn't beat.  I mean it could only be 8 yards longer and be measurable.

    Highest punting average, game
FBS: 60.4 – Lee Johnson, BYU vs. Wyoming, Oct. 8, 1983 (5–9 punts); 53.6 – Jim Benien, Oklahoma State vs. Colorado, Nov. 13, 1971 (min. 10 punts)

    Longest punt
FBS: 99 – Pat Brady, Nevada vs. Loyola Marymount, 1950

  • think they said on postgame show it was either 7th or 8th longest punt in ncaa history.

only time i can remember a punt that long was the time wvu played nebraska in the kick-off classic many moons ago.  pretty sure sauerbrun's 90-yd punt was THE mountaineer hilite of that game.

  • I would think that might garner some NFL attention as long as they don't ask him to hit chipshot field goals, too.

  •  I may be wrong on this but I believe N.Y. Jets punter Steve O'Neil holds the NFL Record at 99 yards.

  • Longest FBS punt in the last 45 years.  Just imagine the 1,000s upon 1000s of punts that have happened in that time. I don't think it's really sunk in for people how spectacular that kick was just yet. It wasn't some fluky bounce, he was standing in the end zone and it flew the opposite 30.

  • I saw Todd Sauerbrun of WVU clout one 90 yards in August 1994 against Nebraska, at Giants Stadium in NJ. But it didn't help any, WVU got belted 31-0 that day.

From that, he was about 4 yards in when he kicks, it lands at the 26 and is stopped at the 1 when touched...so about 78 in the air and 103 total.

i was in high school and watched that game on tv. They said that record(98 yards net) would never be broken because the Jets punted at their one yard line and they stopped it at the opponent's one yard line.  If it's longer then a touchback and out to the twenty or at the punting end a safety. 98 yards net punting-no return or touchback. Herd's punter was 72 net due to touchback--placed at 20 yard line.  I think the ncaa goes by net yards like the nfl on punting average instead of overall length of kicks.

  • Cotton said on the radio that the previous Marshall record was 79 yards (set in the late 70's), however a player that was later proven out to be ineligible had an 80-yarder for MU in I believe 1926. It was a pro baseball player that was bored in the off-season so he created an alias and played for MU. When the AD was asked to cash a check for him it all came to light, maybe played in around 3 games. Cotton had available both the guy's real name and the alias he used - amazing the detailed records from 90 years ago or so.

An absolute blast off the foot of Vedvik.
