The Herd defense, which forced a turnover at its goal line early in the game, held the Monarchs to 197 total yards, 45 in the second half. It is the second week in a row MU has held its opponent to a single field goal, the stingiest back-to-back performances since the 1997 Herd blanked Bowling Green and Ohio.

The result lifts Marshall to 5-1, already one game short of bowl eligibility, and 2-0 in Conference USA.

“Anytime you can play great defense, play tremendous special teams, and offensively we took care of the football — we didn’t turn the ball over,” said coach Doc Holliday. “Happy with the outcome, and I thought that in the second half we were able to run the ball and do what we were capable of doing.”
