  • Former Herd coach Ron Jirsa (who engineered consecutive defeats of that school up north) is an assistant at Radford. We really ought to play them more often. Good, competitive program who made the NCAA last year and an easy 3-hour trip...well as easy as I-64 can be right now.

  • bbcard1, Radford is "loaded" this season, and I believe the Big South favorite.  Believe they won the league's tourney last year.

They play in the Dedmon Arena, named after a former RU president, who was also MU's president at the time of the air crash.  They only draw, or use to, around a couple of thousand fans per game.  Their campus is growing and has undergone a tremendous building boom in the last decade or so.  Actual real construction and not a lot of "plans on paper" like at Marshall.

  • Sounds like a good game to get. Close, OOC games help with fan travel for both teams.

  • FWIW; Dedmon was the "acting" president of MU during the time of the plane crash. He was not a candidate for the permanent MU job or was not considered for the job. Dedmon did such an excellent job during his period at MU during the plane crash, he was approached about becoming the president of MU permanently . Dedmon had verbally accepted the Radford job and keep his word to that school. I think Dr. Dedmon would have done an outstanding job if he had been the permanent president of MU.

  • Radford is pretty cool. Back in the day I could get off work at the Army Ammunition plant on Friday and be at the boardgaming table in Proctorville with my droogs in around 2 - 2 1/2 hours as I recall.

I see these games and think how we really needed Penava inside this year. Because with Elmore and CJ we are peaking. Hence my #stunned post. But we will be better for the development of the young front line in 19-20 for not having Ajdin this year.

You talking "Avalon Hill" & "Strategy & Tactics"?

  • It was more of a beer and pretzels approach when I was around. Although none of us drink. We'd play stuff like Lunar Rails and similar crayon railroad games - I once won our only 5-player game of Iron Dragon, sneaking to victory when esoteric arguments broke out such as whether man is an animal and whether women should be considered as property.  8) I was asked the latter by one guest and heartily agreed, but he said, "You're laughing." and didn't believe me. Pandemic is another cool game we liked.

Now that I have retired to Panama and my so-called friends won't let me skype in anymore, they are on to 2-player strategy war games like Hitler's War, etc. I liked the tactical board games such as Armor, Panzer, and '88' back in the 80's.

  • I may try and go to the ND game next year when we play them. I really enjoy going up there.

Not to say Wikipedia is moderately incorrect, my source that was in the proverbial room where it happens has told me many times that Dr. Dedmon really wanted the job but that, as you say, he wasn't really considered.  I'm not sure you're correct about his potential if he had stayed at MU - maybe so, but he left Radford under a cloud so who's to say that wouldn't have happened here?

  • Speaking of former head coaches, I saw Herrion on the South Florida bench this afternoon as his team was blowing out Ohio by around 25 points. They are playing in a Tournament in Jamaica.

I can tell you from a first hand source that DD was never offered the job to be Prez of Marshall.
