  • Reading this thread is bringing back memories of Gay I had forgotten. If I recall, GE resented Marshall for not recruiting him, and he carried a chip on his shoulder when he played against us. So, it brings a tear to my eye to see what Jon has done here.

Just an amazing turn around of events.

  • Very well said. I remember Mack McCarthy saying that MU was one of his favorite places to visit. If I remember correctly he actually applied for the head coaching job here back in the 90’s.

Mack wasn't the only one, 48.  I believe Cal when at Memphis said the Cam and Herd fans weren't easily to play in and before.  He urged MU fans to come out in similar numbers for all Herd games and not just against the Tigers.  Former coach and announcer Pete Gillen always seems to note the fans and atmosphere in the HC.  Even last night I believe the comment to our coach from a couple of the refs was very complimentary about our crowd atmosphere, enthusiasm, etc.

Sometimes we as Herd fans often put our selves down and underestimate how others often view us. In the So. Con, as noted back in Huck's days, we and UTC's Mocs were clearly above the pack in our fan support, game atmosphere, etc.  Fell off some during our last MAC days but our fans still could get fired up with the league's best.  Just ask the late Charlie Coles, long time HC at little Miami!!

Huck was hired in the spring of 1983 and I think Gay graduated from high school in May/June of 1983.

Gay Elmore is an American lawyer in Charleston, West Virginia who is better known for his collegiate basketball career at Virginia Military Institute between 1983–84 and 1986–87. During his career, Elmore scored a then-school record 2,423 points in 113 games, which at the time of his graduation was also the fourth-highest total in Southern Conference history. As a sophmoore in 1984–85 he scored 17 points in the championship game of the Southern Conference Men's Basketball Tournament, but the Keydets lost to Marshall, 70–65. He was named the tournament MVP. In Elmore's final two seasons he was named the conference player of the year, becoming the 10th player to earn the honor at least twice at that point.

After averaging 25.5 points per game during his senior season, the Milwaukee Bucks selected Elmore in the sixth round (133rd overall) of the 1987 NBA Draft, although he never ended up playing in the league. He attended Washington and Lee University School of Law and became a lawyer. Today, he and his wife run Elmore & Elmore, a law firm in Charleston, West Virginia, primarily handling real estate and business law.

His son Jon Elmore plays college basketball at Marshall University. His other son, Ot, is an assistant coach at Glenville State College.
