  • Sonny did not play the style that could win at Marshall especially back then. It was 2 yards and a cloud of dust except 3rd and long. Parrish came in and threw it all over the place. I couldn’t believe Marshall was actually moving the ball on offense that year. And then it was QBU from there and we became very successful thru  the years.

The Herd always have had great QB. Carl Fodor along with Parrish's air offense lit it up. From there it kept growing. We haven't really had a great prototype QB since Stan Hill. The closes one since then was Chase Litton.

  • E-Man and herdorbust, both of you spot on in your assessments.  Went from night to day offensively in Parrish after Sonny.  Randle ran his tailback(s) like they were OJ or Oklahoma's Billy Sims, 30 to 40 times a game.  Remember a pretty good back we had then by the name of Larry Fourquean (sp.)?  Sonny called him "Queen Bee", but ran him virtually into the ground.

In many ways football wise, particularly on offense, going from Sonny's O to Parrish's was like going from Herrion's style to Danny D.'s in basketball!!!

  • "Air Parrish", the formula for winning with smaller players; and a great quarterback.

  •  FWIW: Sonny was 39-69-1 in five seasons at Marshall.  His fifth and final season he was 4-7 and he finished in fifth place in the Southern Conference at 3-4. Sonny definitely improved the program. The expectations were high for his fifth season and he started off with a loss to EMU, a really bad team, and he never recovered from that loss. I seem to remember he started a JC quarterback that game who suppose to be the qb to make The Herd a winner. The transfer qb never panned out and really hurt the team. I think Fodor ended up as qb for the final part of the season. It was a long ago and  my memory may not be correct. I can't find a lot of info on the internet about those days.

I believe the Juco QB was named Ted Kendrick. Yeah, high expectations that never panned out. Then Danny Wright from Greenup Co. played QB after that I think. Anyone remember them passing out the styrofoam Marshall hats that took on the 1920'S look?

I know Sonny's record wasn't good but you could see his teams played better and were for the most part competitive his last year. He loved Marshall for sure.

Ted Kendrick, I couldn't remember his name. He played in Sonny's last season in 1983.

Danny Wright played at Marshall from 1977-1979 and was Sonny's QB in his first season in 1979. I remember the protection collapsing around Danny and he ran the ball a lot.

Thanks Flat. I wasn’t sure about Danny’s timeline at Marshall. I do know I saw him at Forest Hills Golf Club in the mid 80’s about as plastered as a golfer could get. It was hilarious speaking with him.
