  • Opinion could go either way, from Wikipedia:

    Quote
Marshall believed that slavery was an "evil," and he opposed the slave trade, but he owned slaves for most of his life. He had reservations about large-scale emancipation, in part because he feared that a large number of free blacks might rise up in revolution. Marshall instead favored sending free blacks to Africa, and he founded the Virginia chapter of the American Colonization Society to further that goal.[130] During the 1790s, Marshall was involved in a few cases in which he represented slaves pro bono, often trying to win the freedom of mixed-race individuals. In one such case, he represented Robert Pleasants in a case to emancipate about four hundred slaves; Marshall won the case in the Virginia High Court of Chancery, but that court's holding was later reversed by the Virginia High Court of Appeals.[131]

In 1825, as Chief Justice, Marshall wrote an opinion in the case of the captured slave ship Antelope, in which he acknowledged that slavery was against natural law, but upheld the continued enslavement of approximately one-third of the ship's cargo (although the remainder were to be sent to Liberia).[132] In his last will and testament, Marshall gave his elderly manservant the choice either of freedom and travel to Liberia, or continued enslavement under his choice of Marshall's children.[133]

Biographer John Richard Paul writes that Marshall owned between seven and sixteen household slaves at various points in his adult life.[134] Research by historian Paul Finkelman, however, reveals that Marshall may have owned hundreds of slaves, and engaged in the buying and selling of slaves throughout his life. Finkelman suggests that Marshall's substantial slave holdings may have influenced him to render judicial decisions in favor of slave owners.

  • Back about a million years ago I  had an English teacher , an "old Maid " type with the steel rimmed glasses and hair in a bun. She was one of the wisest people I ever knew. One day we were discussing the wild life styles of the Romantic poets. Shelly, Keats, Browning etc., How could such drunken reprobates produce such beauty? "Trust the Art and Not the Artist" she said. Now nothing excuses slavery, but John Marshall's contributions to the building of this nation are his art. His life may be another story.

  • If they change the name they might as well shut down the institution.  There won't be anyone left to support them.  Enough is enough with this trash.  These protesters have never even opened a book.  Most could care less about equality.

  • Don't be surprised if it eventually gets to something like renaming the university.  Why?  Because there are not any rules to what has to go.  When the frenzied mob starts and gets drunk with power, and no one stands up to them, their power grows.  The scope of destruction keeps getting wider and deeper.  We say you can't have this statue, or this monument, and it goes without debate.  Then it goes to more and more of them.  What comes next is you can't have this book, or this film, or this song, then it comes to you can't use these words or express these feeling, then it becomes you can't even have this kind of thought.  We're actually already seeing it happen right before our eyes.  The mob doesn't stop, eventually it will come for something that each individual believes is worthwhile and worth preserving but by then it will be too late.  This is why we have a First Amendment to defend even those expressions that are almost universally accepted as vile.  Because once the house catches fire it isn't stopping with one room, it's taking the whole thing.  And once your freedom to think, believe and express yourself as you see fit is gone your other rights start going too, because how can you have a means to stand up for yourself at that point?
"On rainy days, the early justices would enliven case conferences with wine. On other days, even if the sun was shining, Chief Justice John Marshall would order wine anyway, saying, 'Our jurisdiction is so vast that it must be raining somewhere.' "

  • The main Leftist libtard mouthpiece CNN's Anderson Cooper is the 4X great grandson of multiple slave owner Cornelius Vanderbilt whom Vanderbilt University is named after.  I bet ole Cornelius gets a pass.

The correct and logical saying would be "most couldn't care less . . . "

Think about it: if they could care less, that means they hold some amount of caring. If they couldn't care less, that means they hold no amount of caring, which was the point you were attempting to make.

Perhaps, if you opened a book more, you would know that.

  • Glad I’m not aligned with the left. What a bunch of communist whackos. Like when they always said”you don’t need a gun, just call the police”. Now they want to get rid of the police🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️. They said walls and barriers don’t work, yet they put up barriers in Seattle. They always say how they want to protect our children but 63 million babies have been killed from abortion. They say Trump is to blame for everything but these people like Biden, Clinton, pelosi, schumer etc have been writing the laws for decades. They say Trump is the racial problem yet he passed the crime bill that helped African Americans. Obama didn’t. He created opportunity zones and had the black unemployment at the lowest level ever. Obama didn’t!!!

Trying to score points because he used a broadly adopted idiom instead of a phrase you prefer because it makes more logical sense is a sad approach.

I don't want to shoot anybody.  However, I would love to see communists and anti-America domestic enemies of the Constitution shot for destructive activities like rioting, looting, burning, killing, and destroying statues and monuments of American history.  Cheers will go up all across America when that happens.

  • Believe this issue has also come up at, gasp, that Ivy League standard bearer, located way "down South", there in CONNECTICUT!!

Yep, for those that think the main culprits in early American slavery were only those Southern plantation owners who needed human labor to work and harvest crops, like cotton, etc., well, it seems that Yale's namesake was a fellow who engaged in slavery, particularly in slave trade, no doubt leading to his wealth in a significant way.  Be interesting if the movement up in far left, ultra liberal Connecticut results in any change to that University's name!

Like everything else the radical communist Democrat Left does......it's based on hypocrisy and selective outage.  I bet CNN's Annderson (takes it in the) Pooper slave owning great grand pappy Cornelius Vanderbilt's statues are safe and Vanderbilt University will not be considering a name change.

  • People shouldn't kid themselves simply because a spark from some woke individual or group with an idea Marshall University shouldn't be represented by John Marshall could easily turn to a raging flame. Cancel culture is not a joke it is real.
