  • . . . it looks like Liberty's "Fighting Falwells", uh, make that Flames have an early stranglehold on the CUSA East race, having knocked off FIU this afternoon after previously beating WKU in Bowling Green!  Oops, I forgot.  CUSA was just "too good" for Liberty!

. . . Looks like MTSU finally found an offense in a close loss to UTSA in the Alamo Bowl today after two embarrassing losses.  Lets hope they really load it up next Saturday down in Murfreesboro in the "100 Miles of Hate" game against WKU before the Herd goes to Bowling Green on October 10th.

. . . WTF has happened to Southern Miss?  66 to 24 drubbing at the hands of AAC also ran Tulane today AT HOME!  0-3, having earlier this season been embarrassed by the Sun Belt's South Alabama at home.  Remember when USM was known for having a competent and hard nosed defense?  The former MU assistant who resigned as HC after game one down in Hattiesburg really left a pile of crap remaining there!

. . . Don't look now, but downtrodden UTEP is now 3-1 after whipping UL-Monroe on the road today.  That means that CUSA's perennial cellar dweller, or almost cellar dweller, is better than the Sun Belt's cellar dweller!

. . .Back to the Sun Belt, UAB won an impressive, 42-10, road game over South Alabama, letting the Jaguars know that the Blazers "weren't Southern Mississippi"!

. . . Elsewhere in CUSA, Charlotte was idle, having played only 1 game, the loss to Appy State, and, like the HERD, twiddling its thumbs; LA Tech has a "gimme" tonight with some obscure FCS foe; and, rumor has it, ODU is busy "behind the scenes" practicing furiously in BASKETBALL, trying to gain any advantage/edge over Danny D's "Denizens" on the hardwood!!

. . . HERD FOOTBALL, you ask?  Well, after another impressive "thrashing" of perennial opponent, OPEN, (at least in the 2020 season), Doc Holliday's team hopes to continue its climb in the polls, leap frogging both Army (#22) and Louisville (#24) who lost today!!  (Don't hold your breath, Folks!).  :D

Hopson officially quit but he simply avoided being terminated.  He did a nice job here and I thought he would be successful there. Obviously that wasn't the case.

  • No one, at least no one with the sense God gave a goose, has implied Liberty wasn't "good enough" from a competitive standpoint to be in conference USA. It is a moral judgement because of their stands on gays, religion and just about everything. They have the finances to compete in CUSA pretty quickly and their facilities are very nice. The downsides are that their market is small, access is difficult (it's the largest city in the USA not on an interstate highway), their general assholier than thou attitude and their limited academic standing. Upsides is the they have a national if controversial brand, they are stable, they make investments in their program, they believe in their destiny,  and they would bring a big old dump truck of money to the conference. Outside of UCF they have done more to improve their standard than any school the last decade.

They are going to get into a conference at some point and will be a great rival the you can build up a genuine hate toward. The problem is that current conferences are scared of the external optics of letting Liberty in, which I agree are pretty bad.

  • No one mentions that when a school pushes as hard as it has so quickly for online degree programs its probably looking for the quick dollar and turning itself into a diploma mill.  Beware.
"On rainy days, the early justices would enliven case conferences with wine. On other days, even if the sun was shining, Chief Justice John Marshall would order wine anyway, saying, 'Our jurisdiction is so vast that it must be raining somewhere.' "

Sounds to me like you are thinking about that Eastern paragon of "higher learning" named SNHU, Southern New Hampshire University, which apparently can afford to daily run 500+ commercials on numerous TV stations!

I know a few people that attended and graduated from Liberty. They all loved the campus and all seemed please with the education they received.

  • Liberty would be a strong addition, just because you might not like everything the school stands for doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be in our conference.  The people who attend Liberty apparently are ok for everything the school stands for and like the education they are getting.

Do you think that Falwell is the first university president to have an affair?  If he is being held to that standard then many schools would not be allowed to join a conference.

Anyone remember a guy named Wade Gilley?  Former President at Marshall.  Later got the same job at Tennessee.  Had to leave there after some kind of "hanky panky" or other controversy involving one of his staff, perhaps a secretary.

Also, how can anyone forget Goofy Gordon Gee up in the Hole?  Has been a President at name schools all over and controversy has followed him at just about every stop!  Puts his foot in his mouth over and over, insults other religions, intolerant remarks, etc., etc., no matter how hard he tries not to.  Yet, the geniuses at our State's so called "flagship" brought him back to WVU a second time!  Before its all over, I wouldn't doubt that this flaky Mormon has been/is involved in polygamy and has wives at multiple locations!

  • Someone should explain why Liberty would be such a strong addition to any conference.  I keep hearing they have a ton of money but so does Rice, and no one is really that hot about Rice either.  Liberty has no tradition, depends too much on online degrees to make money, they are not in a great market and they've had scandals galore in their days, not just recently.  I remember when they had a coach that was winning down there in the 80s and was doing a good job of building them from scratch and they fired the guy to hire Sam Rutigliano simply because they wanted a name to window dress with, that didn't work out too well.  Place sounds like the PTL Club without Jim and Tammy.

They are having black staff and athletes leaving in bunches due to perceived racism just four months ago:

Then again, Liberty, also has a year ‘round ski slope.  Kind of like an amusement park.  Jerry and ???.
