A lot of HS/college coaches have the same philosophy/mentality. Their view is with the 15 yd penalty rule running through the guy and never seeing the ball is worth it. It's assinine. Those techniques can't be perfected because it's unnatural and throwing your hands up when you see the receievers eyes look up rarely works if ball thrown properly or underthrown. It's one reason why the back shoulder throw has become so popular. In addition, it is so much easier to run a DB out of a play.
I use to tell players at HS level to play ball but also go knock people down in your zone....like a crossing route in front of LB. Why? Because there is no illegal contact in HS football. You can't tackle/hold them but as long as ball not in air to them you can knock them down or at least off route. In college you can't do that unless receiver/back is behind LOS, but playing ball techniques can be honed and good instincts can be developed. The ball in the air is as much your ball as it is the offenses, play like it.
