  • I thought the game time atmosphere at App State was phenomenal.  It got me thinking.  Going after markets with potential has clearly been a mistake.  I think large numbers of fans, rivalries that fans can travel to, winning, and ESPN, are the important ingredients.  We should be in a conference with schools that can deliver those things.  What group of 5 schools deliver those things?  App.  State, Marshall, ECU, UCF.  Who else?

I bet that I'm not the only one who noticed this:

The crowd shots on TV Thursday showed a bunch of enthusiastic, loud and profane (properly) young people. ASU's students actually support their team.

TV crowd shots for Marshall's home games show a lot of people more in my demographic, 60+.
In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • Ummm, could it just be that continually throwing the mike down to our scintillating sideline reporter Jason Toy for another stirring sideline promotion, advertisement, interview, etc., is certainly NOT registering with today's college aged students and other youth/young folks.

For geriatrics like me, it certainly is an insomnia reliever! Those "in game" naps make the drive home much easier!

Apps's been on a tear for many years now.  This is us in the late 90s early 2ks.  We had that electric atmosphere back then.  Then we had 2004-2012 of losing or barely winning seasons(3).  We lost a whole generation of fans that would be in their 30s and 40s, now, coming to games with their families and spending $$.  There just wasn't enough consecutive years of winning at a high-level to make people "devoted" who were around Marshall during that era.  We had '13, '14, and '15 which were ok years and got fans interested, again, but had 2016 and lost them all, many for good.  I can probably name 100 die-hard posters that you thought would never stop loving Marshall football that flat disappeared during the Snyder era.  Every one of them was worth 100 casual fans.  That's like 10k people that disappeared over that 5 year span.  People that went to every home and away game and might now go to one game a year if at all.  Any ground we made up with Doc's mid-term run we lost in 2016 and they got fooled twice and said bye for good.   We have no legacy since then for fans to anchor to.

I wish I'd known that the magic era of Marshall football was going to be the end for 20 years or more.  Would have stopped to smell the roses more instead of just running with it.  Haven't felt invincible since then.  We lost games but felt like we could win any game and meant it.  I now feel like we are going to blow it in every single game, even up 3 touchdowns, and have felt that way Doc's whole tenure through the ECU game.  I didn't even watch the App game.  We were never up 3 TDs under Snyder, so it was never an issue, lol.

  • Other than the Jason Toy stuff, I bet our visitors give us higher ratings about our game day atmosphere that we do ourselves. I think we are so used to it we don't recognize it when we see it.

Organizations create this atmosphere, if we want better we need better from the organizations on campus and in town.

  • Our stadium and surroundings are old and tired compared to some of the places we play. Appy was an amazing atmosphere all the way down to the near by bars before the game. Living in Raleigh, I'll go back to an Appy game anytime and cheer for them as long as it is not against the Herd.

  • One must work with what they have; Appy has a very small town in the foothills of the mountains, trees, rocks, new buildings built right up to the stadium.  Huntington has steel mills, meat packing plants, old rail car manufacturing sites, and such.  We have nice atmosphere restaurants as well.

Navy had nothing in the near vicinity of the stadium
FAU is on an old air force base, nothing near it.
USM is not within a mile of a restaurant, etc.
ODU, nice atmosphere, all on campus
UNCC, city setting with no way to get to the stadium and no parking
Murfreesboro, couldn't find a thing to do or place to eat/drink.

I guess there are place we go that are much better than Huntington, but don't think it is everywhere and that we are as bad as folks portray.  And I'm confident the more we downplay what we have, the more others will as well.

  • Pretty simple changes and we will be fine.  Tear down or tarp the end zone addition.  Not needed and destroys the atmosphere.  Expand the concourses by putting a brick and rod iron fence around the stadium.  App St had narrow corridors.

Bingo, 25000 people feels like capacity and atmosphere is top level G5.  Put in some cool bars and microbrews once ACF is torn down and also add a tailgate lot.

Need to tarp the upper end zone unless it's a big game and we have the demand for it.

We need to make upper corners $10/piece tickets, at least offer it as such for a season ticket package.

We need to eliminate the constant advertisements, stupid music, and announcements all happening at the same time.

For the love of God, we have a band and crowd cheers that have happened for decades, let the band and crowd have our moments.
