I believe Brad Smith will put a big focus on online enrollment, or that is what I got from his speech. Not sure about 50K by 2025 since that is just 3 years away, but I would like to see an effort get to 10K online students and push our overall enrollment north of 20K. That would be a great start.

  • Need to grow the on campus enrollment as well. Marshall representatives were supposed to show up at my daughters school twice. No showed both times. Doesnt help my case of pushing my daughter to Huntington. Bowling Green is in the lead🤢

They are down to 3 recruiters spread out very thinly. No excuse for the no show if they truly didn't.

Shocker. No one can defend our poor student recruitment. Lack of funds? You're cutting off your meal ticket. Lack of staff? Again, your  source of revenue for the most part and your biggest source of future donors. No logical explanation for lack of effort.

I work at the University of Charleston.  We have about 1,000 undergraduate students on campus and about another 1,500 between graduate, on campus programs and online programs both graduate and undergraduate.  So, roughly 2,500 total students and we have three undergraduate counselors, another for Beckley, another for the MBA program, another for our online undergraduate Leadership program and another for our military programs.  Seven total recruiters.  Looking at Marshall's web site, Marshall has three undergraduate "Admissions Counselors" and three "Recruiting Coordinators." I'm not sure what the difference is between the two.  There are also two graduate "Admissions Counselors." Still, Marshall has a total enrollment roughly 8 times that of U.C. but they certainly don't have 8 times the number of people out on the road.

I will be the first to admit that Admissions is a hard job for low pay.  It tends to be one of those "first job out of college" jobs for the recruiters and it's fairly high stress in terms of production.  It's kind of one of those things like sales that you're either good at it and enjoy it or you hate it and you're not good at it and you find out which fairly quickly.  Regardless, Admissions is one area where you absolutely cannot be making budgetary cutbacks.  That's analogous to a company cutting back on its sales force when business is struggling.

  • I had the privilege of attending a recent Green and White day with my grandson; it was outstanding. The speakers were succinct, with the exception of financial aid which just had too much to share in her allotted time. The program was thorough, and the prep from each school to showcase their offerings was fantastic.

Student recruitment need to be like an octopus, having coordinators working with volunteers all over the primary recruiting areas.  And also, interested students need to have an easy and free-flowing experience in their internet/online discovery.

Dr. Mukerjee, as the Provost, was absolutely outstanding. I had a chance to visit with him for a moment after his presentation and told him in all honesty that his presentation to the visitors was, without doubt, the very best communications I have  heard at MU in my 49 years post graduation in December, 1973.

I suggest that those of you who've had issues with the university recruiting your kids reach out directly to the MU Alumni Association as they approach recruiting age, or to the MU Foundation. Speak with your contacts at the Big Green.  Let these organizations' leaders do your speaking to the recruiting office for you.

Shouldn't that be the other way around? Shouldn't the MU Alumni Association and the MU Foundation be reaching out to students and their parents?

Marshall, a couple years ago, had 8 recruiters and they had the territories split pretty well. A couple of changes caused a pretty quick exodus of a lot of their recruiters. I imagine they are hiring but fall is the worst time to bring on new recruiters because of travel and no training. They did have a website up where alumni could sign up to help with recruiting efforts.

Green and white days have changed for the better over the years and seem to get better. I would love to see Marshall do a regional reception in Ohio and invite local alumni to speak and sell Marshall to local prospective students.

Agree. It?s never Marshall?s fault on anything. It?s usually the fans fault , poor parent / student communication, etc.

The idea of local alumni is fine as long as you aren't talking about old men like me.  This is where you need to get the under 30 crowd meeting with prospective students.
