  • This is not a done deal...yet but Marshall is in the midst of getting a $72 mill. loan that would cover building the new rec center (which will include most likely tennis courts and track), new softball and baseball field in place of where the softball and track are now most likely, and a new dorm that will take place of Laidley and Hodges. They will tear down those dorms to build one big one.

I was told the new rec center will have ground broke most likely within the year or so. IPF was not included with this stuff but most likely a $30 fee will be added to the season tickets this year to be put towards the IPF. They will not say that on the fee but will say it is going towards infrastructure or something but that is what it will go towards.

The rec center will be built where Glasers is now and he will be moving but are trying to work out the deal now to buy him out. They have offered I think like a little over $500,000 for the building and he wants like $1.5 mill!!! What a Maroon. I think the school will go as far as like $900,000 but not that far. It is all coming to an end boys!!! We will continue to grow and grow.

Funny thing about this whole deal is, and I have been thinking about this for a while now, but Marshall I guess has never taken out a loan before to build things!!! I have asked this question before of why they never have taken a loan out. I guess no one thought of it or something. Anyway, now they are working on it and it is most likely going to happen. This is how WVU has built all kinds of new things. They take out loans.

OK let me do my math.......

    Marshall season tix holders 15,000-16,500
    Extra 30 dollars per tix
    Money brought in- 450,000-495,000

Would Pennington, Leftwich, Moss or Brown match that then. If 1 would match it that would be great. If 2 would we would be well on our way if 3 would we should have enough to build it.

  • 1.5 million for an old building we'll just be razing is ludicrous!  Talk about extortion.  Another thing, I wonder if Marshall Reynolds bank will be the one loaning the 72 mil?

  • there was an article a couple of weeks ago in the herald dispatch that was talking about this and it said something to the effect that the company building it would actually pay for and own the facilities until marshall had paid off the loan off and it said something about there would be an added fee to the tuition.  i think that is basically what the article said.

  • I don't mind paying the extra fee but *_+!, the athletic department needs to tell me why I'm paying it.  Don't just say "infrastructure."  Tell me it's for an IPF and I'll be much more willing to pay it without complaining.

  • I agree with Mako.  Just tell us what it is for and I believe most wouldn't mind paying it.

  • Sounds good and all but I feel that the IPF should have been included.

And if you are going to borrow 72 million, why not just go ahead and borrow an even 100 million and take care of some things needed for CUSA.

It would be easier to call it an "infrastructure fee," that way once the IPF is finished and paid for, people won't expect the fee to be dropped. Also, this "infrastructure fee" could be used to expand to Shewey Building, help with new equipment or even stadium expansion.  I will pay the fee without a problem, but if it is for the football program only, then I want it to go to the QB Club! That way we know exactly what it is going for. FOOTBALL! My Big Green donation goes toward the athletic department.

  • With respect to negotiating the terms of a loan, I wonder how much of a advantage it is that our interim Prez is also a lawyer.

If they're tearing down Laidley and Hodges, wouldn't they build two dorms? Because you have the Community Tech building between the two -

if they tear all three buildings that's going to be one huge @ss dorm - it's footprint would be the width of the entire central campus block.
In the middle of Huntington, West Virginia, there is a river. Next to this river, there is a steel mill. And next to the steel mill, there's a school. In the middle of this school, there's a fountain. Each year, on the exact same day, the exact same hour, the water to this fountain is turned off. And in this moment, once every year, throughout the town, throughout the school, time stands still.

  • I have mixed feelings over this article. Good that we are still on a somewhat positive path of upward mobility; sad that if we are going to take this necessary action we don't go ahead and borrow what we really need to build the facilities that the University really needs today.i.e., the IPF should be included in this package along with a new Bse/ball park.

  • That an unnamed alum/supporter offered to build the new student rec center 2-3 yra ago and said he would finance it and agree to be paid back with bond/student fee money.

    Dan Angel nixed it.

Why?  I don't know but it seems Dr. Angel was cautious about doing anything that supported athletics because a portion of the faculty wanted athletics deemphasized.  I could be wrong about that part. The source for the info 2 yrs ago told me adamantly (sp?) that Angel was NOT athletics friendly accept for women's BB.  Which had lost a TON of money the 2 yrs previous to 04-05 season (not sure what 04-05 figures were).

  • Now we have the chance to fix that with our new pres!!    Let's hope they do find someone who is willing to renew the support for athletics we need.  Some of these profs are stupid!!

  • Who is most recognizable name at Ohio State?  It is not a biometrics prof or even the univ pres....it is Jim Tressel same with Duke and Coach K.

If faculty have an issue with that they should go work at a WViac conf school or an NAIA school.  That's life:  News, weather, sports.  That would be like the Chicago Bulls PR man complaining about how much Michael Jordan "EARNS".  Pruett EARNED his money...it was not given to him.

Teach a class in which 30k people will pay $25 to attend and that profs income will improve dramatically.
