  • Good to read MU continues to add new programs. MU seems to be focusing on science and technology degrees which should increase enrollment. We are no longer just a teachers college.

The Marshall University School of Pharmacy is now offering a Bachelor of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.S.P.S.).

The new undergraduate program will prepare students for entry-level positions in industrial, academic or research environments and continued pursuit of advanced degrees in medicine, pharmacy or research.

?Targeted industries requiring bachelor?s degree-level pharmaceutical sciences skills include pharmaceutical manufacturing, chemical manufacturing, food and beverage manufacturing, biomedical and bioscience, testing laboratories and technical consulting services,? said Dr. Eric Blough, dean of the School of Pharmacy.

Marshall?s B.S. in Pharmaceutical Sciences is also offered as part of accelerated dual degree programs that result in a B.S. / Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) or B.S. / master?s degree in pharmaceutical sciences."

  • Thanks, this is along my line of work. But had to seek a school other than Marshall since the BPharm was not offered at the time, although I took my pre-pharmacy courses there. Now we have three (3) schools of pharmacy in West Virginia. And I recently read a study stating that the number of pharmacy schools in the United States has nearly doubled since 1987. So do the career demand math. If I had a child or grandchild considering this career path, I might have some reservations.

I have heard the above argument from pharmacists before. There has been a shortage or high demand for pharmacists for years. This has resulted in pharmacists getting ridiculously high salaries. I would understand if my career might face a possible reduction in salary, but it helps the consumer and reduces the cost of health care.

I read an article that all the current MU pharmacy grads received jobs. That tells me that there is not a oversupply in the field at this time. Obviously MU officials see the potential and are reacting to the market conditions, that is good for the school.

  • The average pharmacist in the US makes $150k a year.  A darn good living, but not ?ridiculously high?.  I watch what retail pharmacists do and frankly I don?t know how they keep their sanity.  With having to deal with insurance companies, doctor prescribing errors, company policy adherence, product shortages not to mention overbearing consumers, I think they are underpaid for all they do.
Glad to see Marshall offering another highly skilled pharmaceutical educational option.
