  • The Toumas are a real asset to the Huntington community. I know they have restored several of the older downtown buildings. For old timers, I believe the Century building was the location of the Nassers Department Store in the 1960's?

Marshall University is expecting to expand its downtown property holdings this year with a gift from the Touma Family: The Century Building on the northeast corner of 9th Street and 3 ? alley.

The Century Building is one of the oldest buildings in the Downtown Huntington Historic District?originally constructed in the late 1800s?and was restored by the Touma Family in the late 1990s. It is currently home to the Touma Museum of Medicine, the Touma Ear, Nose, and Throat Museum, and miscellaneous office space.

The Toumas already donated the Museum of Medicine to Marshall University in 2017 and now they will be donating the entire building. The Ear, Nose, and Throat Museum will be donated early next year.

  • Interesting story - several years ago I was heading to work on 3rd Ave. at the red light at 29th street I was stopped behind a BMW 750il. I?m a car guy so I noticed it immediately. The light changes and we take off. It is driving very slowly so I pull from the center lane to the left lane to pass. As I start around the car it drifts into the left lane. I move back to the center lane and it agains drifts back in front of me.  Now around 27th street the car starts drifting back to the left - and keeps drifting. A minivan with a mom with two kids in car seats has to slam on her brakes as the BMW drifts so far left it side swipes a tree. The car however kept going, side swiped a second tree and kept going. It finally stopped when it drilled a telephone pole, snapping it off about 18? from the ground and sent it falling across the road.

I had to lock up the brakes to keep from being hit by the falling pole. Got out of my truck to check on the driver as someone was climbing out the passenger door. I asked if they were okay and if the driver was okay. Woman said she was the driver. I asked how much she had to drink that morning. She said ?oh no, I just dropped my cell phone and was trying to find it?.   I asked if finding the phone was more important than the lives of the mother and two kids she almost put into a tree and she was just oblivious.

It was Touma?s wife who I believe was the head of the Marshall medical school at the time.  I called 911, drove around the downed pole and went on to work.
