If we could have done one thing differently, I wish we would have brought in two SR QBs to compete against each other for the starting position.
All the other QBs were freshman, even Fancher was a R Freshman, so they would have understood that it's not their time.
I doubt Colombi had much options to walk in a start at the D1 level.
Because Colombi was a game manager that felt he could hold the ball 6 for Mississippis every play and wait for the perfect moment to open up. If he had the choice between throwing the ball away or taking a sack for a 8 yard loss. He took the sack time and time again.
Some people thought he was trying to hang on to leading the nation in completion percentage and wouldn't throw the ball out of bounds. Colombi may have felt that he could take sacks because he was the only QB with game experience and he had the job no matter what he did because he didn't have anyone pushing him.
Colombi gave us 154 yards a game w/ 1 TD / .5 int. I'm eternally grateful for the Notre Dame game management and Huff has said he doesn't think Cam was ready for Notre Dame.
Even if we had 2 senior QBs we still could have worked Fancher in as a Wildcat in the 4th quarter.
Anyway just throwing out a thought about 2022. It's never good to start a season with an unknown at QB and no one with game experience behind him that's a costly lesson learned. I'm certainly glad they brought in TJ McMahon this season. Who knows how far we could have went with a senior Michael Birdsong type guy. If we would have gotten the QB that went to South Alabama we might have gotten a shot at the Access bowl.
