  • Lot of questions from the media about the NC State game. In fact, very little (see none) Georgia State talk besides the opening statement.

Payne. Osburn. Porter. Burton. Hill. Roberts.

  • Good health news is besides some bumps and bruises, everyone will play, including TE Conley who was held out of the last game.

  • Of course, the obvious question wasn't asked:

What is being done to address the jailbreak runs surrendered multiple times each game that has been played so far?

In memory of Dr Daniel P Babb who taught so much to so many.

  • I couldn't help but to think why did Coach Huff abandon the run the Sunday before the State game?  I was in the stadium, sitting next to a pretty fair retired high school football coach who was not a Marshall or a NCSU fan.  He said, "Why isn't your team running the ball? They are playing three down lineman, you should run, run, and run until State stops you."  It reminded me of Doc before the WKU game, in 2014, when he said we couldn't run the ball against the Hilltoppers and we passed ourselves out of a possible Access Bowl game.  To tell Ali he shouldn't expect to gain much yardage on the ground just did not make sense to me.

  • I think they answered the running question quite well, they were playing a 3 3 stack, major line backer responsibility on the run.   LBs have gap assignments at the snap on the run; and the outside DBs contain; very good defensive alignment against the run. No one else has ran on them; but abandoning the run did put a lot of pressure on the short passing attack. Let's face it, what is missing is medium and long route completions.

I listened, and I continue to be impressed with Coach Huff's knowledge of the game. He represents this university very well, not everything he says works out, but it is obvious he has a pian.

He definitely has a Master's in coach speak.  I'm not buying everything he's selling though.  The P5-G5 reference is already old.....We just played VT and NC St,
not Bama and UGA.  And the bit on telling Ali he won't get 100 yards?!?  Come on Man!!  NC ST struggled with uconn and they had a RB that had 99 yards on 9 carries!!
    GO HERDS!!

He covers for Trcketts poor play calling at times. It amazes me the number of schools that have just average QB's, yet their play selection makes ours look like Vinson D Team. Either the staff isn't very good offensively or they don't trust the players on the field.

Gotta get that and the D fixed for Saturday.!

  • 3 3 stack (ACC D per Ethan Payne)- would somebody draw those X and Os out for me, please?  and how might that affect not being able to stop big run plays?

so what is the Sun Belt's configuration on avg?  draw that out too!

As I understand it, the 3-3 stack defense is simple and designed to stop run heavy spread type offenses.  In a 3-3 stack defense the linebackers and dline are responsible to fill the C to C gaps (6 players fill 6 gaps).  The LBs play closer to the LOS and typically line up directly behind the Dlinemen so as to not give away which gap they are responsible for on a given play.  The spur players on either side of the DL are responsible for lining up against the TE, controlling the D gap, and force everything back inside.  Depending on the offensive alignment, the spur may line up at the apex between the #2 and #3 WR to shut down quick passes to the flats.  If the spur lines up over tackle he has to maintain outside leverage and attempt to force everything back inside.  If a Dlinemen steps down then the spur jams him so he can?t get to the LB to prevent him from filling a gap or if a blocker is sent his way then the spur has to take on the blocker (while maintaining outside leverage) and force the blocker inside toward the C gap.  The spurs main responsible are for the D gap and passes to the flats.

The safety plays downhill in run support and serves as an extra (unaccounted for) player in run support.  It?s the responsibility of the safety to find the ball.

Simple explanation based on my understanding.  3-3 stack makes the DL and LB positions and play calls simple.  It?s really based on the athletic ability of the safety and spurs.  Spurs have to be big enough to play run defense but fast enough to cover short pass routes to the flats.  I may have left something out.  I never played in a 3-3 stack defense.  Hope that helps.

yes, now i do recall 3 down-linemen and Porter hovering just behind, over the middle (and i think two more on either side of Porter).
i don't like to look at replays much, so thanks for taking the time.  i know Porter plays a lot of DE, but he's really a hybrid, correct?
