  • 69 Fouls!!! That is by far the most I have ever seen called in a game. I know the WVU-MU  men's games had a couple in the the low 50's.

  • Get 'em next time. I think if any player had not bought into the system they have now. I think Marshall is going to surprise a lot of people this year.

  • After only scoring 22 points in the first half, Marshall scored 55 in the second half. We did a good job second half outscoring GMU 55-44.

GMU outscored our bench 36-12 in the game. GMU is in year three with their coach. I think there was a lot that was encouraging in the second half. The 2nd quarter was the killer.

  • The way this game is being officiating is simply horrendous to sit here and watch. I had a feeling when they called that first foul on us which was a clear block shot from a mile away that this crew would take us out of our aggressive play.

George Mason has some good players. They have also gotten every call from the two males on this crew.

Unfortunately we are trying to press with some players that aren't good press player types. We are rattled. We have missed way too many free throws and gotten too tentative on defense late in the half and lost track of rebounding.

The primary camera wasn't close enough to the action for me to be certain about the officiating, but it seemed harsh and at times both inaccurate and one-sided. Difficult game to watch. Not sure what happened ( camera work was bad a lot of the time ) at the very end when all I could see was our girl on the floor in the middle of the defensive lane with a menacing opponent standing over her on a made free throw. They reviewed it for a long time but Coach Kim seemed satisfied with whatever they  told her.

Our PG threw some wild passes that I hope she learns to rein in ... a lot of them won't work at this level.

I was proud that we came back and made it close, I expected us to never quit as a reflection of Coach Kim.

Third girl on the press is supposed to be able to swipe passes from the opponent being double-teamed but often said 3rd girl was nowhere close enough.

Need some size obviously, but I think we are going to be OK -if unspectacular - until the roster can be re-worked.

  • I was only able to watch the first half. I like our style of play and what we are doing. First time I?ve watched them and excited to see how the rest of the season goes.

  • Nice comeback after a brutal 2nd qtr. Have to be able to make bunnies and free throws. Agree not quite athletic enough and that leads to deficiency on finishing and defense. FTs no excuse. I think GM started getting better of us on boards after they went a little bigger. We were boxing out 1 big early but struggled when they had multiple bigs. GM coach did a great job using their depth. Not sure many we play will be able to do that. Agree refs disrupted flow of game. Made it hard to watch for fans but not why we lost imo. Our inability to switch to a smaller, more athletic lineup a roster detriment. As we have seen in all levels of basketball, multiple guards are critical, especially if going up and down floor.

Anxious to see what game 2 looks like.

  • Here is Coach Caldwell's post-game press conference:

I didn't hear any excuses. Film will be watched on the bus. Turnovers & rebounds were a big problem. Obviously she stated the second half was much better. And to be honest, you need real games to see who does well when the lights come on under the circumstances. While I hate that we were down that margin at half, I do think she saw a lot of girls that still bought in and had some players rally the troops. It was refreshing after a loss to hear talk about what the players need to do to get better, to hear that they will be watching film on the bus to Chattanooga, and that you could tell that some things were done at half to actually right the ship. I didn't want hear about George Mason's 22 and 23 year old seniors and grad transfers or silly talk. And she certainly didn't go down that avenue. I like the go-getter mentality. Improve so that you are ready for the next game was the mentality.

It is a tough OOC schedule in the fact that we play 8 out of 9 D1 opponents on the road. I am interested to see how they do Sunday. I actually think this season will be a lot like the game last night. I think we struggle out of the gates. But I think come January, we will see great improvement. We scored 55 in the second half on the road. That is never easy in the first game, under a new coach and a new system.

I agree the officiating didn't cost us the game, but good gawd it was awful, just way too many whistles. As you have said and others have said, missed layups plus rebounding is what beat us. Anyhow, excited to see what she does this year, but even more when she has had a few years of recruting.

To one of your points, in an earlier press conference, Coach Caldwell said her teams typically start the year slowly and are very good in January and February.  Let's hope that holds true for this season.  I continue to be impressed by this coach.

Soccer highlights are quite entertaining, though.  I like to watch the games on-demand and fast forward till I see the score change.  Then I rewind a bit and watch the action, rinse and repeat.  Only way can stand it.  I appreciate the athletes and the game, i just can't get into it.
