I?ll give my take on NIL, which many will no doubt think is naive.
I would never spend a dollar on a portal player. Any funds spent would go towards proven underclassmen and roster players the staff believes show a high potential level. My reasons:
We simply can?t afford to buy sure fire talent from the portal. If there?s a QB that?s a sure bet to throw for 3,000 with 25TDs and 5INTs, we will not be the best offer. Same for a D-lineman that can get you 8-9 sacks or a lockdown corner.
Next, buying 1-2 year talent puts you in a loop of always having to buy players because your HS recruit players are always getting bumped back for reps so they don?t develop. You end up either paying $100,000 to educate them while they sit on a bench or they leave after you spend $60,000 to have them sit on a bench.
Third, lack of the team cohesion you need to be successful. You saw it in the first half of the season, all the blown assignments were because you were playing a group of guys who weren?t used to the system or their teammates. As they played together more those mistakes started going away. Living off the portal means this will be an every year problem.
So recruit HS kids, try to take care of them and keep them here 4 years. If they have a chance to cash in big there last year wish them well and move on to the next guy.
