  • When Donnan was our coach, an independent TV station in the DC area carried The Thundering Herd Network football games on live local TV. TV exposure open the door for Donnan to recruit the area.  Pruett had been a high school head coach in NOVA and had a lot of contacts with high school coaches in the DC area. Pruett usually was responsible for recruiting the DC area for colleges when he had been an assistant college football coach.
I was stationed in DC during that time. I called in and pledged $10 for every touchdown we scored against someone. It cost me $60.

  • Isn't that where we got Leftwich?

Yes.  Leftwich played for a school in DC, IIRC.  Want to say "Woodson" but can't be sure!

MU used to, on occasion, get a basketball player or two, from the METRO DC area, Northern VA, etc.  Not so sure if we recruited it to any extent under DD.  Lots of WV people all over the region, including many, many MU alums.  Driving distance in the 7-8-hour range, I believe, to Huntington and when WV finally completes that Appalachian Highway to the VA border just a few miles from I-81, the time will be even shorter.  Whole region probably has 2 to 3 times the population of West Virginia.

H.D. Woodson and during the 70s Marshall recruited a number of BB players from the DC area.

  • Hs anyone else noticed how many times the Aviation assets are a part of the pictures in recruiting, both from the school and the kids themselves?  Funny how one program promotes another.

My father used to say in the context of running a University, "That which you do well, show the public.  That which the public sees, do well."

Aviation programs are starting to really gain some steam.  If it?s good sometimes you land recruits you shouldn?t get.
