  • Just got back from Kroger, picked up a 4-pack of this beer, thought it seemed appropriate for West Virginia Day. I proceed to Google the Country Roads Trust thinking it's some kind of community program. Nope. It's WVU's NIL fund. Doesn't say that anywhere on the label. 15% of proceeds from the beer go to the fund.

I think there's no other option at this point than for me to commit seppuku for the shame of contributing money toward this.

    A great heads up post!
    Thank you Colorado...

Its actually pretty good (Big Timber is a GREAT micro-brewery -- their Logger Lager is top-notch).  I don't buy it out of principle, though.

Oh I agree. I actually love Big Timber. It's probably my favorite WV brewery and I'll continue to enjoy their beer and encourage others to support them in general.

And sadly, I do think this beer tastes better than Country Boy's Herd Country Lager.

I was just surprised. I could even justify to myself an accidental donation to WVU if it was for academic programs for WV students or something. But if it's strictly for athletics, and even worse, something as icky as NIL, no thank you lol.

  • I have discovered this charming little brew called Natural Light. You should try it.  It is only available in any store at all.

    Thanks for the heads-up.

Partial to Coors Light myself.  Although, Natural Light hold a special place.

Lawnmower beer is the only way to go.

  • I always liked Budlight but luckily had stopped drinking any alcohol long before they went all fufu.  Having owned a bar in the local area for 15 years, Budlight, by at least 3 to 1, outsold everything else combined.  I'd be curious to know if that has changed and to what degree.  There were nights we'd sell 100 cases of BL and maybe 30 of everything else in total.  Same for the taps.

Bit harsh, new guy.  Sounding like an 'eer fan doesn't do us any favors, either.

  • I am more of a craft beer user instead of the industrial America adjunct products. To each his own. I have found  that Yuengling Premium is a decent lawnmower beer. Premium was the main Yuengling product until they started making the Traditional Lager (too sweet for my tastes). Premium is available in Florida since Yuengling has brewery located in Tampa. It is only available in 24 can cases in Florida where I live and I think it is only available in a few states? Not sure? Premium has a price point similar to Busch.

For older beer drinkers, Yuengling Premium reminds of the old local beers like Fesenmeier; Weidmann; Hupdephol ect. Those beers had a distinct taste compared to big brewers that now dominate the market.

FT2, don't you mean "Weidemann"s", brewed by the George Weidemann Brewing Co. of Newport, KY?  And isn't that "Hudepohl", the Brewing Co. somewhere around Cincy?  Believe that they referred to their brew as the "14 K" beer!!

Growing up in the Southern WV coalfields back in the 50s, you were lucky if your Cable TV System got more than 2 channels.  Of course, WSAZ-TV was always one of them and, IIRC, beer commercials were very omnipresent on Channel 3 in that time.  No FED or other restrictions of beer/alcohol advertising on the Tube at that time, again as I recall.  Channel 3 advertised about all beer and brewery products from the Cincy and Louisville regions back to the Tri Sate area.  List included Falls City also.
