    https://lsutigerswire.usatoday.com/2024/07/24/ncaa-expected-to-approve-expanded-scholarship-limits-in-college-sports/

The biggest changes will come in football, in which the scholarship limit is expected to expand from 85 to 105 to include current walk-ons; and in baseball, where the full roster will be permitted to be on scholarship compared to the previous 11.7 limit.

Basically no more walk-ons from this revenue sharing era we are approaching in 2025 season.

  • Basically the big dogs get bigger.  With the NIL coin they grab up the prospects that were on the fringe, the prospects that the mids would take in a heart beat.   Not that most knew it wasn't coming, I feel this just exacerbates  the coming chasm between the top 64 in a new class and then the rest of the schools.

Right now, schools are allowed up to 120 players on their roster during the season with no limit in the offseason during times like spring practice. FBS programs are allowed 85 football scholarships and as many walk ons behind them as they'd like to fill out the roster. That will soon no longer be the case.

There are three critical roster changes that will come with the settlement when it's expected to go into effect during the 2025-26 academic calendar year:
The 85-scholarship cap is removed. Schools are now allowed to give out up to 105 football scholarships.
Football is now an equivalency sport ? all sports will be under the new rules ? and no longer a head-count sport, meaning the school is no longer required to give full scholarships to each player receiving aid. That means football programs can split scholarships if they choose to, like you see in sports like baseball.
The 105 roster limit is firm, which will result in many programs having to greatly reduce their roster sizes while endangering a lot of walk-on programs.

  • Makes sense.  Mu T&F brought in it seems 1,000 recruits.

"Another key change to the scholarship structure: All sports will be considered 'equivalency sports,' meaning partial scholarships can be distributed to players,".

Looks like partial scholarships can be given in not only football, but basketball as well starting fall 2025.

  • How does it affect Title 9 college requirement? Will a school have to offer more women sports or scholarships if they increase the above numbers? Anyone an expert that can explain this situation?

Athletics programs are considered educational programs and activities. There are three basic parts of Title IX as it applies to athletics:
    Participation: Title IX requires that women and men be provided equitable opportunities to participate in sports. Title IX does not require institutions to offer identical sports but an equal opportunity to play;

Scholarships: Title IX requires that female and male student-athletes receive athletics scholarship dollars proportional to their participation; and

Other benefits: Title IX requires the equal treatment of female and male student-athletes in the provisions of: (a) equipment and supplies; (b) scheduling of games and practice times; (c) travel and daily allowance/per diem; (d) access to tutoring; (e) coaching, (f) locker rooms, practice and competitive facilities; (g) medical and training facilities and services; (h) housing and dining facilities and services; (i) publicity and promotions; (j) support services and (k) recruitment of student-athletes.

  • I think these are going to be Allowances, not requirements.  All it really does is allow P4 to grab more athletes from the rest of the NCAA and NAIA schools.  Now 20 more football players can go sit in the stands on game day at all those schools, get a degree; knowing full well that their becoming practice fodder for the folks who will dress and play.  What a deal, NIL money for the players, scholarship money for the sitters and practice fodder. Got to love where our beloved college sports has gone.

To maintain compliance with the federal Title IX law, any scholarship increases in a men?s sport will likely need to be replicated in a women?s sport, driving up the additional costs.

Interesting little nugget also in the article.
Sounds like the power schools will force the split, based on if schools choose to do revenue sharing.

schools and conferences in the Group of Five, FCS and non-football playing Division I programs ? are bound by the roster limits, reporting system and enforcement mechanism only if they choose to share revenue with athletes. They can opt out of the new model if they decline to share revenue.

  • *wonder what the end game to all this decades-in-the-making greed and power BS is?
arguably, the only things i'm aware of offhand that is not BS is paying people fairly for their individual contribution to something, no matter who is contributing or how much they contribute.

also wonder if and when we'll start seeing schools drop athletics.

*some of you who grew up in the 60s-70s remember the occasional college athlete being paid indirectly or the HS student whose family suddenly moved into the district of another school so that school would have a star athlete to compete with their peers?

also wonder how HS/middle school athletics will end up

  • Get rid of the APR rule next.  Some people go to college and leave bc they don?t like it or run into financial hardship.  And programs are not equal to each in resources.  Programs should not be penalized for it.
