  • Part of me wonders if someone prompted the article.

Not clear if Gibson has had a chance to speak to any players in light of this occurring during finals week.  It will be interesting to see if the dust begins to settle Thursday when he should have a chance to meet players.
I don't like to lose, and that isn't so much because it is just a football game, but because defeat means the failure to reach your objective. I don't want a football player who doesn't take defeat to heart, who laughs it off with the thought, 'Oh, well, there's another Saturday.' The trouble in American life today, in business as well as in sports, is that too many people are afraid of competition. The result is that in some circles people have come to sneer at success if it costs hard work and training and sacrifice.- Knute Rockne

Rumor floating around that Huff told all the players to test the portal.

    If true that's pretty low.

Like the Republicans who blamed everything that went wrong in the U.S. on Jimmy Carter for 20 plus years, how long are folks around there going to blame anything negative that happens football wise on Huff?

  • This article is being posted on a lot of college football message boards. It may be a joke, but it is gaining traction. Brad has got a real mess on his hands. Hopefully he will be able to handle the bad publicity. I feel sorry for Gibson walking into this situation.

Can you imagine if we cancel the bowl game as rumored. Not a good situation.

Well I thought we were in a great spot in athletics under Smith and Spears? Heck we got Gibby for 6 full years. A basketball program thriving and players jumping overboard like it was the titanic right before a bowl game. What's not to like?

  • For those of you who do not know, this isn?t exactly a fake article. It is just an article like a lot of others on that site, which is cobbled together news stories pulled from social media comments. Athlon Sports has a very similar article. It came about because Jerod Smalley, former Marshall University journalism student and current news anchor in Columbus, made an obvious exaggeration in a Twitter post saying the ?entire? team entered the portal. In today?s world of websites making money based on clicks and the more articles you churn out, the more money you churn out, they just took his quote and created an article out of it. Lots of places do this with Reddit threads and Twitter or Facebook threads. Many use AI to write the article based on the thread comments.

    Here is Jerod?s tweet:

  • I like that they mention 100s of players from successful P4 teams have entered the portal and then say we're losing our whole team.  Looks like there's a lot of room for upgrades and a lot of good players to fill those spots.  And we just happened to recently come into a nice windfall to be able to afford to flesh out the skill positions.  Business as usual.

The part they didn't say was when Cignetti did it it wasn't in the same neighborhood.  It was a different conference and a step up.  Southern Miss is now on my permanent "suck it" list.  Not because they accepted a guy with no place to go, but because they courted him while he was still here, under contract, with at least two more games to play, not including the bowl.  That's an unforgivable sin, imo.

In addition they are unapologetically obnoxious about taking Huff in their minds from us.

None of them are listening to the drip of information we are providing them, that Huff did not want to be here, they firmly believe he  left because he wanted to upgrade into Southern Miss. I told them, karma is a bitch.

If the reports are true, keep in mind it was the USM AD calling us for permission to interview Huff that tipped us off to Huff's deceitful behavior.  Football coaching contracts prohibit interviewing without permission from the current employer and such permission is generally granted.  In this case it sounds like USM was trying to do it by the book and it was Huff alone trying to be underhanded.

It was USM fans following an airplane that tipped the Marshall fans off, however.  I just don't think you go after a conference mate.  I don't even like portaling conference players.  It's bad business.  Should be bylaws.  I said to them it should be once-removed.  Like Marshall's Huff to USM, after Duke.  Or Troy's Neal Brown to App State, after WVU.  We have enough poaching to focus on without worrying about siblings.
