BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — As usual, adversity hit Marshall from all angles in the third quarter. This time around, the Thundering Herd not only persevered, it hit back.

As a result, the Herd exited ancient Legion Field with a 31-24 victory Saturday night over Alabama-Birmingham. It was a crucial, morale-boosting victory that may have stopped the Herd’s season from circling the drain.

“I haven’t really felt like this since this time last year, when I played Tulane,” said Shavar Greer, whose fourth-down sack sealed the victory. “It was just a real amazing win for us. The guys, they stood up for each other — when the defense was on the field, the offense was cheering us on; when the offense was on the field, we had the defense up cheering.

“I believe we took a step in the right direction tonight.”

The Herd (2-5 overall, 1-2 Conference USA) has had trouble getting out of the gate in the second half, particularly in conference play. That continued at UAB, as the Blazers scored on their first possession to cut a 28-14 lead to 28-21. When the Herd got the ball, Doug Legursky stayed on the ground after a rare 3-yard loss by Ahmad Bradshaw.
