HUNTINGTON -- Utilizing growing offensive options appears the clearest path to a much-needed win.

While Marshall University's defense rehabs toward a semblance of health and special teams remain steady, an evolving offense could shoulder the short-term load. Quarterback Bernard Morris clearly has a pair of favorite targets, but still is managing to the spread the ball; true freshman Darius Marshall is exceeding expectations at tailback, with a pair of notable exceptions.

High-scoring opponents Tulsa and Southern Miss loom, meaning victory No. 1 of 2007 might be earned via a shootout. Marshall (0-5, 0-1 Conference USA) matches prolific offenses with West Division leading Tulsa (3-1, 1-0) on Oct. 13. Kickoff at Skelly Stadium is 7 p.m. and WOWK will televise the game.

Morris nearly rallied the Thundering Herd Tuesday night in Memphis, but miscommunication resulted in a fourth down incompletion. The 24-21 loss extended a frustrating start to the season, but offered glimpses at offensive potential.

Wide receiver Darius Passmore and tight end Cody Slate combined for 13 receptions, 125 yards and two touchdowns. C-USA's top receiving tandem has hauled in 60 passes for 661 yards with seven scores.
