  • Can some of you who are more knowledgeable than me please explain MU's probation issue.  I understood that in 2001 we were put on four-year probation with a reduction of 15 scholarships spread out over the four years (in other words, not 15 lost schollies/year but 15 total over the four years).  Given that the probation was handed down prior to our first game in 2001 (Florida), I assumed that the four-year period would've ended in 2004 but at the latest 2005.

Do we now have the full complement of scholarships (85) and if so, when did probation end and are we up to the full 85 scholarship limit?

    Thanks for the explanation.

The probation was that in 3 straight recruiting classes we could only take 20 new players, instead of 25. So in 2002, 2003, and 2004 we were limited to 20 new players.

So last year's redshirt seniors were guys that came in under the only the first year of new counter reductions.

Right now, based on DA's math, we're at about 71 scholarships.

  • Thanks for the info soccer but why wouldn't we be back up to the full complement of schollies?  We are 7 years removed from the probation announcement and assuming we could only offer 20 new schollies per year beginning 2002 and continuing for 4 year, we would've been back up to offering 25 schollies to the last two recruiting classes (2006 and 2007).

I'm not an NCAA regulatory guy or an MU compliance guy but I'm confused as to why we only have 71 scholarship players.  When we played Miss in the 1997 Motor City Bowl they were on probation and limited in schollies also but I don't recall them suffering through 7 straight years of scholarship reductions, like we seem to be.

We're actually at about 80, but the difference is that a lot of walk-ons were given scholarships as a reward and not because they will help in the long run so the effect is the same.

  • A team is still limited to 25 scholarships per year, so a program can't make up the difference simply by recruiting more players in the years following probation.

Right, we have about 71 give or take 2/3 that were brought in under scholarships.

If we had 26 seniors in one class (which I think we did) we could only go out and replace them with 20 that year. Based on the press releases I can find and Rivals, in 2002 we brought in 12 of 20, 2003 18 of 20, and 2004 15 of 20.

Pruett taking so many JC's and NQ's in 2004 that never suited up or only was here for a year, really really hurt.

  • We are back up to our full allotment of scholarships as of this year.  The 71 figure you quote is false and misleading.  We have all our scholarships available.

  • Snyder said something about seeing a difference on the field with the amount of guys practicing.  It sounded like we had a maxed out squad.  No excuses, the coaches aren't getting it done.

No excuses, but we are NOT maxed out.  We're still catching up.  I think with 25 given next year, we should be close to 85.
