HUNTINGTON -- Both the present and future of Marshall University football were addressed on Friday.

Thundering Herd players conducted a full pads practice featuring several welcome returns. Defensive end John Jacobs (hand injury), out since early September, dressed for the afternoon workout, along with middle linebacker Josh Johnson. Jacobs is expected to resume full-contact workouts on Wednesday.

A skeleton coaching crew directed the spirited workout, the second in as many days.

"It was like this yesterday too," Marshall head coach Mark Snyder said. "It's been good. The kids are still trying. Spirits are still up. We all realize we have some work to do."

The collective goal, of course, is earning victory No. 1 of the season. At 0-5 overall and 0-1 in Conference USA, heads understandably could hang, but players have responded well since Tuesday's 24-21 setback at Memphis.

Marshall's defense especially was energized Friday, making plays and remaining vocal throughout live drills. Safety C.J. Spillman provided the top highlight, returning a midfield interception to the end zone.

  • I just figured out how the players  get helmet stickers.  They get them for doing things well in PRACTICE.

  • Our current record will make recruiting harder, for sure. We will probably have to grab some JUCO's, gamble on some kids with poor grades and search hard off the beaten trail to keep up.

Hopefully we dont have anyone back out on signing day.

Thats not totally true.  The coaches have been in contact with these kids long before this season started.  We can tell them we are young and inexperienced and with hard work they could possibly play immeadiately.  It will be harder, but all is not lost yet.
