TULSA, Okla. -- Just three plays after E.J. Wynn delivered his highlight-worthy moment, Cody Slate went to work.

With his team trailing 38-24, Marshall University receiver E.J. Wynn hauled in a 25-yard catch near midfield. Slate, a sophomore tight end known for creating mismatches via speed, then strapped on his fullback helmet.

After hauling in a catch over the middle, Slate bulled through several tackles and carried defenders along for a 47-yard gain to Tulsa's 11-yard line. The drive stalled on downs and Marshall's overall comeback effort was squelched in a 38-31 loss, but Slate's catch and run underscored the fight remaining in a team that could go the wrong way at 0-6.

"It was beautiful," Thundering Herd senior center Doug Legursky said. "He's got so much heart and so much ability. And for him to put his body on the line and squeeze that football and run through those guys shows what kind of guys we have on this team.

"We have a lot of guys on this team like that."

Marshall's offense largely kept pace with Conference USA's No. 1 attack, totaling 444 yards. Legursky and the offensive line cleared paths for 184 rushing yards, one yard shy of the season-best total set in the previous game at Memphis.
