  • If they all end up playing next year it will help greatly.    We will add one post-up player and two outside shooters that have practiced with the team all this season.   From what I have heard they are all good players.

I was thinking we had more than 3 transfers for next year. Is there a fourth?

  • A friend of mine had some drinks w/ an asst. coach and he said the 3 transfers could pick up 2 and beat the starting 5.  Now that was before season got rolling I would have trouble believing that now but that came from an asst. coach @ the beginning of the season.

  • All three have a good chance to start or get lots of playing time. We are looking for a combo guard and a big man that can rebound and play defense.

  • Let's look at who we lose and who we add...just to see.  Now unless you've seen practice, which few have, it's all really based on perception at this point.

    Graduating:
    Pierre Marie Altidor-Cespedes (6'0, 181 G)
    Jean Francois Bro-Grebe (6'9, 230 Post)
    Taurean Marshall (6'3, 190 G)
    Mark Dorris (6'2, 175 G)

    Incoming:
    Brandon Powell (6'3, 187 SO G)
    Chris Lutz (6'2, 190 JR G)
    Octavious Spann (6'6, 220 JR F)
    Marcus Goode (Sp?) (6'10, 300+ F)
Damier Pitts (5'10, ~180 FR PG)
And according to Donnie, "A commit that hasn't signed so I can't talk about him"

We may be TWO years away still...depending on how quickly those guys catch on (they've all played before, but Daryl Merthie's performance last year after sitting out a year compared to this year is proof that some have to make an adjustment).  But considering at the moment, we're playing without Marshall...Bro-Grebe is about 30% or so...and Markel is ailing...we have the potential to be in the 2-4 spot next year.  We need more size though to compete...but stealing a 6'8 version of Tirrell Baines does not happen often.

Our roster next year would consist of the following (next year's class listed)

    0-Daryl Merthie (6'0, 190 SR G)
    1-Brandon Powell (SO G)
    2-Matt Walls (6'3, 200 SO G)
    4-Markel Humphrey (6'5, 225 SR F)
    5-Chris Lutz (JR G)
    15-Robbie Jackson (7'0, 265 JR Post)
    24-Octavious Spann (JR F)
    25-Adam Williams (6'4, 200 JR G)
    30-Tirrell Baines (6'6, 210 SO F)
    32-Tyler Wilkerson (6'8, 240 JR F)
    40-Bruce Senior (6'6, 230 SO F)
    43-Jesse Oglesby (6'10, 250 SR F)
    -Damier Pitts (FR PG)
    -Marcus Goode (C)
-"Another player who has committed that hasn't signed"

What sticks out to me is, along with the infusion of talent for next year, we'll be extremely young with just 3 seniors (granted 2 may be starters).  Regardless...our best days are ahead.  If Bob Marcum retires tomorrow, his last hiring choice for head coach would be by far his best...

  • Can Powel play the point? I thought he played a little at Florida.
If so, I could see next years line up like this:

    Powell - PG
    Lutz - 2 SPOT
    Humphrey - 3
    Baines - 4
    Goode - 5

Pitts may be good enough to start at PG if Powell cannot. Merthie needs to step up a little more. Either way, we'll have solid depth at all positions for sure.

  • Of course the transfers will help.  It wouldnt surprise me one bit if we have an entire new starting five next year.

  • IMO, Baines and Humphrey will be two of the starters next year.

If I had to guess (based on Goode being ready)

    Pitts
    Powell
    Humphrey
    Baines
    Goode

    Or

    Pitts
    Powell
    Lutz
    Humprey
    Baines

  • and Wilkerson is improving too........the verbal was from some HS 6'8 player
that was having a very good HS career.......his coach naturally said
nice things about him.........if he comes and Goode is eligible with Tyler and Baines, we will be in much better shape under the basket

Dori, I see DJ going to the smaller starting lineup, which can press, defend and shoot, then bringing size off the bench as needed. JMO.

  • With the quality of coaching we are seeing from DJ and the addition of Lutz and Powell, we can challenge Memphis next year.   I'm not guaranteeing that we will beat Memphis, but I think we will have the talent to pose a serious challenge.

Don't be surprised if this year's starters are relegated to a supporting role next year.  You can see the difference in talent in the Coach Finney segments on DJ's show.
