  • ever suit up for the Herd could very well be true.  Bill Wilt was the kingpin in his recruitment and with him gone that probably means Gambles gone to.  Its a shame to because Wilt says this guy was a complete man amongst boys and if his academics were in order he would've been at Miami or FSU for sure.

  • I'm assumin you mean Charles and not Phil. If Papa is right and Albert McClellan is better than Julius then we might forget about Chas in a hurry. Not to mention Rasco, Jacobs, Roberson, Hoskins, Kitchens etc.

    Thanx for the update

  • I truly look for McClellan to be an impact player at MU before his career is over. Same thing with Rasco.

We know when we recruit these kids that theres a 70-80% chance that they will never see the field at Marshall. In the likelihood that they do they usually make an impact ie Rogers Beckett. But for every Rogers Beckett there will be 10 James Houston's.

  • Thing that sucks about that is when we lose these guys it really hurts our depth which will cause us to lose games.  We need to start getting some guys that actually want to play here and have decent grades so they get to play at some point.

  • Thunders, these are props, guy.  This happens every year.  Do this exercise:

Pick the top 5 players every year for the past 10 years.  Then go back and see how many of them were props.

Props are high risk.  Our average is about 1 in 4 finding a starting role.  Losing props is a slight depth problem but nothing like the sanctions.

This year, we will have less than 70 scholarship players on the roster.  We will be 15-20 short.  Mostly because of the NCAA sanctions.

But a far as props?  I don't count any of them until they suit up for a game.

  • i only found stuff on houston.

where is DA's post on Gamble.

as far as houston goes, Tito eluded to this months ago.  as far as gamble goes, he was going to be tough to get eligible anyway.  wasn't he a trick to even get in school?

to summarize, houston was a NQ from last year who has been on campus and was scheduled to be eligible this year.  gamble is an incoming NQ who won't even come.

  • Why do we always say,  it's a shame so and so couldn't make the grades, but we never look at a Yeager Scholar and say, it's a shame he's not 6-5, 330 and runs a 4.5.  In many cases, it would be as easy for a Yeager scholar to pack on an extra 100 pounds of muscle as it would be  for some kids to make the grades they need.   Marshall is a university that gives a lot of kids chances and sometimes it works out.  It's not necessarily a flaw in their character if it doesn't...in some cases the classroom work is just not what they are cut out for.

I think given the context and the challenges, we really should celebrate the Prop athlete who make it.

Just a Thursday morning observation.  It's not always a matter of trying harder.

  • have never developed the self-discipline or matured enough to succeed in a class environment.  Come to college (away from home) where it is much tougher than high school and it only gets worse.

Some will take it serious and learn to adjust.  Others have never learned how to "learn" and aren't motivated enough to.  Others are so far behind when they get here that catching up and catching on is very difficult.

But as someone alluded to, they are high risk and should not be counted on until we see them in pads for the first game of the season anyway.

For us to think "boy, that Akia Brown, or Keil Angry, or Elmer Holmes could have been great players here" is useless (i'll admit I use to think those things alot too).  When one doesn't make it, it gives a shot to someone else who may be able to contribute. It is what it is.

I am encouraged that Souder (who many think will be a real stud) is on campus along with Underwood and and some others.  The competition for positions should get about every player jacked up about competing and impressing the new coach and pos. coaches.

  • What would make a NQ not show up in the fall, unless he is headed to a "Hargrave" type school.  I was a TA 5 years ago, and a current NFL'er was upest that the professor gave him slack for missing 10 of 12 classes. He was told to drop and did.

Half of college is showing up for class, the other half is doing a minimal amount of work.  MOst of these players are in any rocket science classes; theyare in majors that they can academically handle. I hope Gamble makes the right decision.
