EDITOR'S NOTE: This the second of a 12-part series previewing Marshall's opponents for the upcoming football series.

HUNTINGTON -- For fourth-year coach Larry Fedora, it's getting to be about that time. Time to win 10 games. Time to get by Conference USA East bully UCF and earn a crown. Time to fully emerge from Jeff Bower's shadow.

Bower's 17-year run at Southern Miss was an absolute model of consistency. Fourteen winning seasons. Six bowl victories. Three outright C-USA titles. Marquee upsets over the likes of LSU, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn.

His abrupt ending in 2007 came as a surprise to many, including himself. It was a forced resignation that didn't sit well with the white-haired 54-year-old.

"I want you to know there's a lot of fight left in Jeff Bower, and I'm not done yet," Bower said at the time.

So under these swirling circumstances, Fedora made his way to Hattiesburg after a successful three-year stint as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State.

  • USM's in my Top 10 most hated college football schools...the does little to help their cause.

"When you take that field today, you've got to lay that heart on the line, men. From the souls of your feet, with every ounce of blood you've got in your body, lay it on the line until the final whistle blows. And if you do that, if you do that, we cannot lose."

  • So. Miss usually has a great team. They are one of the best in the conf. every year.

Does anyone on here know why they asked Jeff Bower to leave?

  • I have lots of respect for USM. Jeff Bower was all class and did a great job there. Fedora has had big shoes to fill and is still trying to fill them. We have thoroughly enjoyed all 3 trips we have made to Hattiesburg. The Golden Eagles fans have been great down there as have been the ones that visited here. After we beat them down there a few years ago, we received many kidos from USM supporters. I like being in the same league with Southern Mississippi.

they kept going 9-3 and that wasn;t good enough for them, they felt they should be in a BCS game, and Jeff couldn't take them there.  Be carefull what you wish for.

  • I remember attending the memorial service at the fountain prior to a USM game a few years ago.  Many USM fans attended the ceremony and were very respectful.  I am glad they are in our conference.  They are good competition and have a classy fan base.
Strategy without action is only a dream.

I absolutely agree. When we run into their basketball fans at the conference tournament, they are classy as well.
