Western Kentucky athletic director Wood Selig said yesterday that the university has been approached by Mid-American Conference officials, who are interested in replacing schools that are leaving after this season.

A possible move from the Sun Belt Conference to the MAC has Western officials considering a jump to Division I-A, the highest level of NCAA football.

Selig said MAC commissioner Rick Chryst called him last week to request a profile on Western's athletics and academics.

  • If the MAC can get Temple for all sports, it might be a good move for them.  If they can only get them for their Buffalo quality football program, it would have to go down in college sports history as one of the stupidest moves ever.

I mean even though WKU has a I-AA National Title they only avg 8700, I guess they will fit right in the MAC.

  • Actually, if WKU joins for all sports, they will definitely add strength to MAC basketball.

  • I believe their finances were in such dire straits that they cut some schollies.

The MAC doesn't care about attendence now since it looks like the NCAA rule will be tabled.  WKY is a reach though to be in 1-a for all sports.  I'd be suprised if their ath. budget is even half of most MAC schools.

Problem is MAC needs 14 and there just aren't many schools in the region out there.

  • I think the MAC would be good for WKU and WKU would be good for the MAC.  Temple on the other hand is not that great of a pick-up.  JMO...

WKU President Gary Ransdell said the MAC would be a better fit for Western Kentucky when it comes to academics as well.

“The institutions in the MAC are more directly aligned with our strategic plan,” he said. “A decision to move to the MAC would be far more focused on academics than athletics.”

According the Chryst, all the MAC schools have a graduation rate over 50 percent.

  • Today on a sports talk radio show in Cincinnati, the host mentioned that the WKU basketball coach made a comment that moving to the MAC would not benefit his sport.  I didn't get to listen to any comments...probably wouldn't matter anyways.  The MAC fans hardly call the show.

  • I dunno.  I don't like it.   Too many directional schools.  You lose a Central and gain a Western.

WKU and Temple may be better in basketball, but are not adequate replacements for MU and UCF.

  • WKU in FB is inferior to Youngstown State, and many others.  WKU, while not trying to imply that the men's BB team is in high gear, is living on what happened in their program 30+ years ago.  They remind me of that school up north.  When former Coach Gale Catlett was asked how long he was going to show his BB camp participants the school up north was going to show their appearance in the sweet 16 about 10 or 15 years ago, or whatever, he replied, until we ever get back their again.

It is sad to say WKU is still living in that same mindset with regards glory"?" of the BB team of 30+ years ago.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!

  • You guys don't get it.  THIS IS THE MAC we're talking about folks!  Do you think for one minute the MAC PACk (UT,MofO, OU, WMU, BGSU) are going to want to bring another Marshall in to crash their party?

Heck no.  If they want a solid football program and one that could dominate them for the next 5-6 years, they'd bring in Southern Illinois or YSU.

They want to extend their footprint of apathy.  Temple for football only is perfect.  Temple won't change their attendance, marketshare, or competitiveness and THAT suits them just fine.

Now if only we could get Duke, Vanderbilt and Baylor to join them for FB only, it'd free up some bcs spots for someone that really deserves it.

YSU has done nothing since Tressle left. They would be safe in bringing them in. The only thing is Im like RF on the MAC board that would make 1 more Ohio school. And to make the MAC look simi decent they are going to have to pull from schools outside of Ohio. This means 1 of 2 things. The MAC has to go after WKU, SIU, WIU or schools like that and YSU will never move up to I-A unless someone from the MAC leaves for another CONF. Such as C-USA
