  • fine.  But the cold hard truth about the MAC is its a better conference now for us being in it than it was before we joined.

    Quote
It was never about what Marshall and Central Florida could do for the MAC. It was always about what the MAC could do for Central Florida and Marshall.

Marshall and Central Florida used the MAC as a springboard to join Conference USA.

    Emphasis on used.

Marshall made an impact in football. The best thing about Central Florida's football program was Orlando's proximity to Disney World.

Does the MAC really need Temple, situated in the no-man's land of college football?

hahaha! this guy is a joker. The MAC only has like 3 schools with what could even be mildly classified as having a respectable fan base... this guy is not so smart... plus leave to someone from toledo to put a jab at Marshall who kept the MAC affloat and forced the teams that are now good to become that way... what a Maroon

  • The thing is the MAC presidents and most fans knew we wen't going to be "LIFERS". But they used our school to make their conf better. If not for Marshall, the MAC would still have 1 bowl bid never be on TV and no school would employee a recruiting coord. If anything the ppl should be thanking us for coming in and dominating them the way we did to make them all reaise their standards. But most ppl don't see things like that. Im just glad we don't have to go to Kent to play infront of 2K and 1995 are our fans.

  • . . . and the MAC took Marshall for purely altruistic reasons, right?!

No.  The MAC took Marshall for ONE reason---to help with dwindling attendance numbers throughout the conference.  The conference didn't bring in Marshall to help Marshall . . . and Marshall didn't join the MAC to help the MAC.

You're correct  Lydia, if I could leave the MAC as we foynd it. I would. But the fact of the matter is, we made at least 4 schools raise their standards because they wanted to win. When Marahall joined the MAC the football was on par or just a little better than the SunBelt right now. And if everyone drops their recruiting coord like I think they will when Marshall leaves it could go back down.

  • I'm a Marshall fan if you can't tell by my E-MAIL address, and here are a couple things I have to say about your article when you start talking about the Herd:

""Marshall and Central Florida used the MAC as a springboard to join Conference USA.""

    ""Emphasis on used"".

    1. Marshall was never going to be a "Lifer" in the conf,  7 schools have been in the MAC since 1952. In a conf, started in 1947.

    2. Marshall done more fore this conf in their 8 yr run then any school did in the first 50. Marshall gave the MAC perception it needed as a legit non BCS conf.

    3. Toledo has seriously looked at C-USA 2 times and I think if the Invite would have been there you would be saying bye bye to Kent State, Akron, Buffalo, Ball State, CMU, EMU. You know where you go and you have more fans than they do most of the time.

    As was said:

The MAC let Marshall in to help the MAC,  Marshall joined the MAC to help Marshall.

Any school would leave the MAC if the right offer was there.

I'm sorry if you didn't understand that the Herd wouldn't be around for your grandchildren to watch us play in conf games.

  • The people from Toledo are beginning to sound a lot like the people from WVU.  "Since you didn't invite us to join a new conference we'll just denigrate the schools that are leaving our conference."   What's next, Richrod wearing his coaching whistle to the Sizzler, too?

  • Sure we did just as the MAC used Marshall to elevate the football programs for the entire conference, who the hell does the MAC think put this conference on the map, Buffalo, Kent , EMU. NO IT WAS AND IS MARSHALL , without  The Herd, the MAC might very well have already become the 1-AA conf it is destined to become. We got what we wanted (CUSA even though the Big East would have been nicer) and the MAC got what they desperately needed, a shot in the arm, cash in the bank and some decent football to boot.

  • I am a diehard Marshall fan, but I try not to look at things with tunnel vision, but I think that the MAC was good for Marshall and Marshall was good for the MAC (obvious reasons).  The MAC allowed Marshall to become more on the National Scene when it comes to football and as a confrence as a whole (NFL DRAFT).  The MAC and Marshall Football brought more than winning seasons.  Look at student enrollment; if I recall correctly when I attended Marshall in the late 80's and early 90's enrollment was only about 8,000 students (I could be wrong it is 2:00am) and I've heard now that it is over 15,000 in students.  Not to applaud the efforts of other schools but look what winning and exposure has done for PaPa Joe and Penn State.  Bowden and Florida State.  Holtz and the Irish (1980's).

Recently I was on campus and I was blown away byall the changes to the campus.  Look at the funds that are being used to upgrade the University as a whole.  In a nutshell, did we use the MAC, Maybe, but it has to be mutual, the MAC is much stronger now, (besides attendence) and can play with anybody on any given day.

I don't know;  I thought it was kind of cool getting into some of those MAC away games with the admission being a can of peas.

  • Ohio U. is in the process of seriously upgrading their FB program, & hoping to move to C-USA at a later date.  They have the fan base to make this move if they work at it.  They do not want to drop down to 1-AA football.  Toledo, as well, would like to do the same thing, but their northern  geographics have at present placed them on hold.

I wish them both good luck for the future, and hope they can work out their given situations, but find it classless for them to throw stones toward a house they would give their right arm to be in.

    GO THUNDERINGHERD!

From what I hear, OU has the same aspirations as Marshall and it's not to be a member of CUSA.

Agree.  Unfortunately for them, they do not fit into any of the growing conferences.  They're stuck in the MAC.

  • basically, this UCF and Marshall are being criticized for dreaming for bigger and better things for their programs.

kind of like that bunch of friends in the ghetto making fun of someone who got a job and moved to a better neighborhood which gives him and his family better financial opportunities.

But would Toledo jump if the Invite to C-USA was there, from Rocketfootball and Oddball (poster on the MAC board) who's mom works in the ADs office, said not only was their support behind the move their was a "Yes" vote waiting if C-USA ask. I assume the reason Toledo didn't get in was because Temple was dragging their feet as all sports. Temple says yes, I think C-USA goes to 14, Temple/Toledo and Miami OH or Ohio and for some reason I wanna say it would have been Ohio.
