HUNTINGTON — ­A man who once played for retired Marshall University men’s golf coach Joe Feaganes is replacing him.

Matthew Grobe, who spent the last six years as head golf pro at DragonRidge Country Club in Henderson, Nev., was named Friday as the Thundering Herd’s head coach.

“I’ve known Matt and his family for a long time,” Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick said. “He is not only a high-quality person, but an up-and-coming professional in this business.”

Feaganes retired after the 2012 season, ending a 40-year run with the program.

“I’ve always wanted to come back and coach,” said Grobe, whose father, Jim, is a former Marshall football assistant coach (1979-83) and now head football coach at Wake Forest University. “I’m a Huntington guy. I grew up with Marshall football. Met my wife Melanie (Heiser) there.”
