CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Many major-college football coaches have a long, twisted career path through a number of schools, and Lytrel Pollard's path to Marshall has gone through Memphis.

And that generally means one thing: He has experienced some painful football.

Currently MU's cornerbacks coach, Pollard had the misfortune of witnessing the end of Memphis' Tommy West era up close - he coached the Tigers' cornerbacks in 2008 and 2009. The 2008 season was a rebound year, as the Tigers rallied to earn a bowl berth and finish 6-7.

The 2009 season? A 2-10 disaster, punctuated by West's dismissal. The end was announced in early November, with the lame-duck staff allowed to finish the season.

  • Are Memphis and UK the two examples that we can easily put a finger on of schools who "don't care about football" and put their resources into basketball?  I'm sure there are more, but these two are pretty obvious to me.

Duke and Indiana have to be in the discussion... maybe Temple.

Duke and Indiana have both stepped up recently and paid some good coaches, Duke is going to a bowl this year and still in contention in their division in the ACC. Whether they commit long term to fb will be TBD.

  • Indiana is definitely a good one.

Kansas and Duke are making a run at football...and Kansas has a BsCS bowl game in their recent past.

  • Kentucky puts a lot of resources towards football also.  They have just found it difficult to gain any traction.

they do, but when you spend as much as you do on fb recruiting for basketball midnight madness, you're a bb school :)

  • As much as I hate Duke, they have proven that the right coach or coaches  can get it done. They are bowl eligible already.  In the movie, "The Natural" it was said over and over, " Losing is a disease." This is year 3 and mediocrity is not getting it.
