  • I dont own an egg YET but I do have two friends with electric smokers that swear by them. Just set the temp. and add some wood chips in the little box and let it go.

I have researched the green eggs and will have one soon. Did you get the pizza stones or half dome with yours?

  • I have an electric smoker and LOVE IT! But when looking at buying one make sure you do NOT purchase one that takes the "biscuits." The reason is that you have to buy their biscuits and they're not cheap. With the master built smokers (this is what I have) you can easily added wood chips, which can be bought at Walmart for a couple bucks for a 5 lb bag.

  • I did not get a pizza stone.  I got a "plate setter," which is an ABSOLUTE must have.  I just use an old pizza stone from my kitchen on top of that if doing pizza.  Didn't get half grids, as I generally don't cook that many things at once.

Hear this: there is NO COMPARISON betweeen any other smoker and the BGE, for any that doubt.  I've had them all.  I no longer own anything but the BGE.  Here's what I did on thanksgiving.  Started egg at 7am.  Ran it 325 from 730 until 1pm smoking an 18 pound turkey.  Took the turkey off.  Put on a 15 pound pork shoulder for the tailgate.  Ran that until almost midnight at 225.  Get this: I never added charcoal or wood chips!!!!!  What I put in at 7am was enough.  By the way...going to the subject of this thread, I only minutely adjusted the temperature 3-4 times the whole day.  The temp just doesn't change once set.  The only reason to adjust is to change the rate of cooking.

Then, on Saturday, I re-started (did add charcoal) and ran the BGE up to 900 degrees to cook steaks.  Of course, each meal was better than anything I've ever had at even the best restaurants.  That's not about me...it's because of the egg.  It is that good.  Best part, it will last at least the rest of my lifetime (I'm 39).  I will never buy another grill/smoker, unless I get a small egg for tailgating, or a full sized pig smoker for full pigs.

When you consider it will last 25-50 years, the BGE is a bargain.  Guys, seriously, if you can spare $50 per week, or even month, save up the money and get one.  At $50 per month, you'll have one in time for football season 2014!!!

Anyone on the auto temp control?

  • I don't see a link to what you are talking about but have been thinking for some time about getting one, just haven't taken the plunge.

Here's a link to a LOT of great info on Ceramic Cookers, charcoal, gadets, etc. - http://www.nakedwhiz.com/ceramic.htm  Go to the "Product Reviews" link and scroll down to "BBQ Temperature Controllers".  This guy knows about just about anything out there...Go to Amazon.com to compare prices on each.

Another nice gadget is the Spider - http://www.ceramicgrillstore.com/large-spider-big-green-egg.html  Set it up and you can set a pizza stone on it, set it down and you can put a cast iron grill on it and sear steaks that much closer to the lava pit.

Here's a little trick I threw together for less than $10 worth of parts from Lowe's...Really good for loading her up with wings...

Don't judge...the top rack was an old, rusty one I had in the garage.  Since replaced with a new one.  I know, I know, I do need to refinish the wood on my wings or replace them with tile.

I've had the wings prepared on this one (at least I think you used it on those wings) and they were great. My 15 year old son loved them and still talks about them.

AWESOME!  I've been wanting one, but Home Depot was like $39 and I wasn't paying those f*cks that much.  Off to Harbour Freight on lunch break!!!
