  • Is when Herrion started pressing and went to a 1-3-1 zone. The players got into it with energy and the fans loved it. And Boykins and Manning was in at that time. I hope Herrion will finally understand there are times for a trapping zone and full court pressure. It brings energy and gets the crowd involved. His philosophy of a half court game and man defense does not match his players ability. They are ATHLETES not shooters. They need to be in the open court running and making plays. If he continues to play a half court game and rely on "shooting" we will lose a lot of games. If he let's these kids get after it and press and trap and run the floor we can do a much better job IMO. VERY FRUSTRATING!!!!

This is really bizarre but I agree with a lot of what GreenBison60 is saying, especially about pressing on defense from time to time to shake things up.

I have often felt the same way. Our players seem built to run and we have big man depth to sub them in and out when gassed.

However we seem to make a lot of bad passes in transition.

We really need to try it out for a half or so against some early weak competition and see how it plays out.

  • It's just commonsense. You Don't have good shooters but you have LONG ATHLETES. Why would you come down and insist on setting up in the half court? If you get it inside MOST LIKELY Spikes or Goff will miss the shot. We are shooting horrible from 3 and don't even have a decent half court set anyway. No motion on offense and mostly just standing around. Why wouldn't you want to play to your strength. Get your athletes out pressing and trapping and creating easy baskets? I've always said the last couple years....if we had someone like a Rick Huckabee coaching this team that knew how to really coach full court pressure and speed up the game, this team would be light years ahead of where they are. JMO!!!

Herrion in the post game interview made it very clear that we did NOT go into a 1-3-1. He said it just looked that way for a moment.

  • well the coach can say what he wants but it was a 1-3-1 with manning on top kane and scarver on wings Boykins in the middle and I believe it was spikes down low changed the game the freshmen gave new energy and wanted to be on the floor it put us in the lead then the coach takes out the freshman(cant let them play to long) goes back to man and we go back down by six only because they may be a worse free throw shooting team than we are.

  • Herdmeister i heard him say that. But his ego did NOT want it to look like he did that right after HUGGY schooled him the game before with the exact same thing. He said he just brought the wings up in the zone and it looked like it was a 1-3-1, yea right!!! I don't care what he said if it looked like a duck and it quacked like a duck, it was a 1-3-1!!!! Herrion's problem is he may know basketball but he is stubborn in his philosophy and it has cost him many games in his career. Not only on the offensive end but the defensive end as well. If he thinks this team will all of a sudden get better on the offensive end by playing and running the same offensive sets, we will lose a LOT of games this year. He better gets these athletes in the open floor CREATING and pressing and trapping on the defensive end or this season will be a huge bust.

  • That was a 1-3-1. They were trapping on the perimeter. You don't do that with a man.

I listened to his post game interview that was later than what we heard on the radio. On that he did say that he played a couple of minutes of zone.

  • Herdmeister i didn't have to hear coach tell me what it was. I was there and could SEE that it was a 1-3-1 trapping zone. Now he can say he just brought the wings up or whatever, but it was what it was and it worked. Now will his sorry stubborness allow him to do this more often? It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that he is using the type of personel he has totally wrong. If he wants to play halfcourt offense, let him go get shooters instead of athletes. Like someone else on another board said. He needs to stop playing more like Princeton and more like the Tark's runnin rebels. If you have long athletes that are not great shooters should you get them out pressing and running or let that atletic ability stand around jacking up bricks?

  • 2-2-1 Full Court Press and settled into a 1-3-1 last night.  In practice on Friday they worked on it for an extended period of time.

GB remember when I said this offenses strength would be to run the floor and get those quick transition points?? We barely even have a half quart set.  If they are playing a zone on us, it is throw it around he top of the key and throw up a 3 4 times out of 5.

  • Right now the simple basketball we are seeing is very bad. Changes have to be made or we are looking at a maybe CIT bid. The hype was an NCAA bid and someone posted our RPI is 277. Inexcusable. The only way we make the dance is to win the tournament.

  • Maybe Herrion didn't wanna make it public that we played a 1-3-1 that way Cincinnati doesn't prep for it  ::)
