The Herd returned 5 starters for the '01 season:  Yates, Kool Aid, Street, Crocker, and Tynes.

Kelly had 2 stints as D Coord for the Herd:  the first was from '96-'98, and the second was from '00-'01.

1998:  Herd ranked 23rd nationally in total defense
1997:  Herd gave up 18.8pts/game... first in MAC in pass defense, 3rd in total defense
1996:  Herd led SoCon in total defense and scoring defense

He also designed great defensive plans for the Motor City Bowl in '98 (Louisville) and '00 (Cincy).  Had a good game plan for the '97 game against Ole Miss... depth and conditioning wore us down in the 2nd half.  I love a coach who can get up for big games, and I love the fact he never had a convenient excuse (Ex: how easy would it have been to say "the offense scores too quickly!" in '96?)
