I'm not much of a bread eater anymore except for the occasional burger. But growing up and until a few years ago I had a several favorite sandwiches. They were fried egg, fried bologna (or spam), cheese on Heiner's white bread with lettuce, tomato and Hellman's mayo, side of Snyder's bbq chips. Also liked a BLT on toast with Bob Evans bacon, mayo and sweet bread and butter pickles. Another good one was chunky peanut butter and homemade strawberry preserves on white. Oh and turkey, bacon, red onion and muenster cheese with pub mustard. Wow, I didn't realize how much I miss bread until I started typing all of this.

    What's your favorites?

  • My favorite sandwich, by far, is an ultra packed grilled Reuben.  Second favorite is a fresh garden tomato/lettuce BLT or just a grilled tomato sandwich for that matter.  Other than that, I'm not much of a sandwich connoisseur, I'll generally eat whatever my lovely wife puts in my lunchbox.  ;)

  • I have two and both are common.  I just like a good old Philly cheese steak or a gyro.  I like a good biscuit as well but man if I go to Tudor's I can feel the snap on my jeans pop so I don't go often!

  • You guys ever try a Vietnamese sandwich called Banh mi? I had a buddy that lived here in Dayton (since relocated to Pittsburgh) that married a Vietnamese girl. He would invite us over for cookouts all the time with about 20 of her family in attendance. They made all kinds of great food like lime beef, ceviche, bbq smoked pork and spring rolls.

With the spring rolls we would all be sitting around this big table drinking beer and talking and all the ingredients would be in seperate plates along with the rice paper and a big stainless steel wok shaped pan with water in the middle. You would dip the rice paper in the water to moisten it, then build your spring roll with shrimp, crab, veggies, peanuts, cilantro and sriracha sauce, roll it up and eat it. We would do that all evening.

Anyway, they are the ones that introduced me to the vietnamese sandwich. I was actually surprised to find out they made them on french bagettes. They used either sweet flavored bbq pork or meatballs. Then they would add on cucumbers, onions, shredded carrots, mint, cilantro, hot sauce and hot peppers. Those things were awesome. The picture above looks similar to the ones they made but the buns they used were longer, skinny and very chewy.

  • Bahn mi are really quite good. I'm a sammich fan. Love me a good sammich. My overall favorite is probably a classic BLT with a fried egg (so a BELT, I guess). And I love a good patty melt. I guess that's a burger-sandwich hybrid, but when it's done right, it's damn good. There's a barbecue place in Fort Worth that does a great fried bologna sandwich.

When I was in England, I tried a sandwich combo that turned out to be really good. I found out the hard way while I was over there that what they call "mayonnaise" is actually that "salad cream" stuff you see on the store shelf in the international aisle... and it's way, waaaaay sweeter than Miracle Whip. I already don't like Miracle Whip, so it goes without saying that I like ultra-sweetened Miracle Whip even less. So I went in this chain deli over there that's known for making its sandwiches and salads fresh daily, and every single darn sandwich I found in the cooler had mayonnaise listed in the ingredients, with one exception: a toasted baguette with brie cheese, sliced tomatoes, and whole basil leaves. It was tasty. I made it for my older son (who's a bit of a foodie), and he's added it to his regular rotation of stuff to take to school for lunch.

These give me instant diarrhea, but that's why they make Imodium.

  • Bennigans Restaurant has a sandwich called World Famous Monte Cristo and it's incredible.  It's description doesn't do justice to it's incredible taste.

Other than that I like a traditional club sandwich, cut it 4 wedges.

But, I'm sure you guys know about Boar's Head right?  It's about $10 a pound, but it's world class stuff.

It's the only deli meat I'll purchase other than a local turkey farm Bowman Landes sliced turkey breast which the market down the street carries. One of my favorite Boar's Head product is their "All Natural" line. They have fewer selections of it, it's a little more expensive and it only has a 2-3 day shelf life once you purchase it but it's worth the extra money IMO. I usually buy it twice a week in 1/4 lb increments. I get the All Natural Tuscan Turkey and the All Natural Cap-Off Roast Beef medium rare. Once you try that stuff you'll be hooked.

Another good one to try is their Cajun Turkey however it's not in the all natural catagory. It has a little kick of heat that creeps up on you. Like I mentioned earlier in the thread, I don't eat much bread any more except for Ezekial brand but I love to eat thinly sliced deli meat with grapes or sliced oranges, carrots, etc. Sometimes I just roll it up in lettuce like a wrap.

If you haven't tried Boar's Head you should be able to find it at Kroger's.

  • A good cheesesteak is always awesome. The bun/roll can make or break it.
