  • Just curious.  I know we have some good outdoorsmen on here.

When I'm in the woods or camping I like a little 4 inch Mora knife as my belt knife.  I use a Hoodlum (about the size of an issue K-Bar) as my camp knife or for wood splitting.  I don't like stainless.  It is too hard to sharpen quickly and you can't get a spark by striking it.  I like just regular carbon steel and keep whatever kind of oil I have around on it.  It sharpens quickly and you can get a spark if needed.  I also like the metal to be full length so it is strong and absolutely none of the screw top handles that you can put Rambo crap in.

If you are really just wanting a knife to carry in your front pocket for daily use I would just get an Old Timer or Buck.  Those are traditional folding pockets knives and will last long enough for you to pass down to your kids.  They aren't expensive either.  If you want a little larger knife in your pocket the price will go up quite a bit but there are several brands out there that will be just fine.  Gerber does make some good lock-blades that may be a little safer than a regular folding knife depending on the use.  You can get a small lock-blade from Gerber for not much more than the traditional Old Timer or Buck.

  • I carry this knife.  It has a small flashlight and a small magnesium bar. The flashlight is very handy.

I have several other knives.  If you are looking for a knife, one peice of advice, remember knives are simply tools.  Spending $100 on a knife is like spending $100 on a wrench, it's not necessary. Also, you probably will hesitiate to use it because you won't want to scratch it.

  • I had one of the leathermans.   Carried it everywhere.  Forgot it one time in my pocket and the TSA clown took it.  Miss that thing.

  • Hunting:
I carry a Case folding knife with two blades.  I also have a Buck belt knife I like.  I plan to retire my Case to the gun cabinet this year to pass down to my kids.  I prefer the folding knives to fixed blade.  I recently caught a Gerber locking belt knife on sale at Cabalas that will allow me to switch between a knife, bone saw, and gut hook.  Looking forward to using it this October during Colorado's first Elk firearm season.  I’m a little worried about the quality of the steel in the Gerber but for the price it was worth a try if only for one season.

    Car:
I have a Leatherman in the glove box of every vehicle we own.  Never know when you may be caught in a jam and need a good knife, pliers, saw, or bottle opener.

    Camping:
Although I use to camp and backpack with a Swiss Army Knife, I have switched to the Leatherman style and haven't looked back.  I have both the Leatherman name brand and several non-name brand Leatherman style knives and can't tell the difference.  The Swiss Army Knife is a good knife and I know a lot of people that carry them.  For me the tools on a Leatherman type knife are more useful than on the traditional Swiss Army Knife.

Get a good sharpening kit.  I grew up using a stone or leather strap.  While they both get the job done a good sharpening kit is worth the money and extra time it takes to use.

  • When I worked for DEP, I also carried a Case folding/pocket knife--single blade. I carried it everywhere I went in the field.

  • Case makes great knives.  Can't believe I didn't list them.
