I guess, I expected him to be paid more based on him being a WR and going in the second round. I'm not sure the 4th year helps or not. If he proves to be a 1 or 2 WR, couldn't that cost him the opportunity to make 5-10 million in his 4th year....
800k per year minus fed/state taxes - agent fees - NFL lifestyle expenses - off season personal trainers - dieticians
Probably doesn't leave a ton of money...
If he's that good he can renegotiate after year 3 and get a new deal. That said, he's not going to be making $5-$10m a year. Calvin Johnson is the best receiver in the league and he's making, salary wise, $700k this year, $5m next year, $12m the year after that, before his salary sky rockets where the team will renegotiate or cut him.
NFL salaries aren't what you think, couple that with the fact that guys only get checks during the season too, and you have to have sense and a good financial guy to make sure you're not broke in a year or two. I know the whole NFL lifestyle has left a lot of guys bankrupt, most of which were borderline guys, making the league minimum, trying to live like they were making $2m a year, and not $500k.
