  • I haven't seen this posted yet.  If it has sorry.

I received a card in the mail from MU discussing the Va Tech game and away ticket purchase policy.  As I recall, it is different than last year.  Does anyone know if this is a permanent change or just because Va Tech is so limited.

Last year, I think it was based on Big Green level and I could get 8 tickets for OSU.  This year it appears I can only get 4 tickets as a chairback holder.  The Va Tech mailing says we will only get 4,000 tickets and has priority based on

    1) 2005 Sky Suite holders - 8 tickets
    2) 2005 Chairbacks - 4 tickets
    3) 2005 Seaon ticket holders who are BG members - 2 tickets
    4) 2005 seaon ticket holders only - 2 tickets
    5) 2005 BG members only - 2 tickets

seating within each of the above priority levels will be determined by your priority point total.

tickets are not guaranteed after priority 1 & 2.

What do you guys think about this?  I know many complained last year.  I can get less tickets but overall am satisfied with this priority.

at the end of the card it says......improve your chances and become a seaon ticket holder and BG member today.  amen to that.

  • I feel that they put this restriction out so people will up their contributions so they can get more tickets.  Good marketing angle but it sucks for some Herd fans.

  • I like it.  Take care of those who take care of you is a good philosophy.  Screw the freeloaders.  They can watch on tv like they always do.

  • Last time I was able to get 4 through Big Green and another 4 off the internet. The four I got off the 'net were better seats than the Big Green had available.

I will probably get mine off the internet if I can't get 4-6 seats in a row; although I know a couple of BIG Hokie donors/alums in Bluefield that I may go with this time and they assured me I should be able to get tickets through them as well.

  • You bring up a good point.  I always buy my tickets through the Universities ticket office, but I do not understand why I can purchas better seating; if I purchase my ticket off the internet.

Regardless, we need to buy through the U because they need the help.

  • I do agree with the priority point system and agree that you take care of those who take care of you.  But I think the limited number of tickets for this game is due to VT giving us less as compared to the 2002 season.  I know we had at least 6,000 there in 2002 and probably could have had more if more tickets were available.  I think that a lot of the big schools purposely "limit" the mid-major schools that travel well so that they won't become a "factor."  I also know of a few schools that split their opposing  fans up scattering smaller pockets around their stadiums.

Take Ohio State last year, I believe they gave us 5,600 tickets.  I want to believe had 8-10,000 been available we would have sold them.  Georgia gave us 5,000.  Didn't 15,000 go to the Clemson game in '99?  I didn't go but that's what I was told.  Matter of fact, Keith Morehouse said that on the '99 highlight film.  Maybe our fans were a factor and the outcome of the game went our way because of it.  I remember a few of the Motor City Bowls had 12-15,000 Marshall fans.  Is it me or are the bigger schools really starting to make less tickets available?

  • I think the difference is the limited number of tickets.  4,000 is less than we usually receive.  We had 5,600 tickets to OSU last year and did not get past level 3 -- season ticket holders & BGreen members.

From the Herd's position you gotta give your best givers the first option.

To me it looks like a fair system.  I just hope my point total is high enough to get tickets!

  • I agree except for one minor flaw - separating the chairbacks from the rest of the season ticket holders.

My wife and I PREFER to sit in the east stands.  We had chairbacks and she hated the fans over there.  This year we plan on getting an additional two tix in section 109 as close to our seats as possible.  If I wanted, I could buy several chairbacks from the donations I give each year.  Yet, I could be shutout because of my preference to the east stands.   :???:

I think it should go back to the points system.  Those with the most points get preference.  I could just spend $900 and get 5X the value.

  • This year, I will get season tickets in my wife and my name and give about the same (a small increase over last year) to the big green, but half in each name.

It's kind of strange how they go about raising funds, but it's the way it is.  I doubt I'll get tickets to VT (didn't get OSU last year and I suspect it was because I was out of state because my priority points were higher than some locals I know who got them), but it's a local game and I'm sure I'll dig a few up.

But back to my point, two years ago, I was netting giving the same amount as a gift to the BG but I did not buy season tickets as a "protest" to problems I have with their scheduling.  That was counterproductive for me.  I am better off to spend the money on season tix, small BG contribution and fantasy camps, etc that I am to give it as an outright gift.  Go figure. Like I said, you've got to play the contribution game by their rules, even if their rules are counterproductive to the university cause.

I think I'll buy chairbacks and let them sit empty.

marcbuff, I'll take those 2 tickets to VPI.  We've actually met at the HerdNation Tailgate.  I'm a season ticket holder and BG member, but got shut out from the OSU tickets last year.  I ended up getting a pair (and the seats were better).  I just don't want to send my money in just to have it refunded later.  Send me a PM.  Thanks in advance.

Yeah, the fans at VPI were the worst this side of Appy State. Thought I was gonna whip or get whipped a couple of times.  The students got all up in your face.  I'll probably go again anyway.  After all, it is The Herd.

That's exactly what happened to us.  My wife refuses to go back. I was really happy to see the series with VT but it took 3 road trips off my fall schedule...

Did your poor treatment occur in the stands or while tailgating?

I had a good time at tech and actually tailgated with tech folk and was treated well.  The worst that I recall (i was intoxicated) is when we left early (mid 4th) that some girl asked us why aren't we staying to support our team.

We set in the Herd section so, we didn't see many tech fans after our tailgate.

The reason I ask is, I guess all schools have some jerks, even Marshall (gasp!).  I know my worst experience was at UNC.  But, we set in the NC section and there ended up being several exchanges between our group at NC fans.  I suppose, other than a few yells from cars passing by after the game, we wouldn't have had much of a problem at all had we set in the MU section.

  • It was just one of those things where we seemed to run into a bunch of jerks everywhere we went.

We had the normal chiding when we entered the stadium but when we left after the game, we took a lot of insults and aggressive behavior.  My wife tried several times to offer congrats only to be cussed at.  We never felt threatened(only because I refrained to act) but it was not a pleasant experience to say the least.  Only at Toledoh was I treated worse.

  • I have made the decision not to go the the VPI game for a couple of reasons. I was shut out of getting tickets for the OSU game, but was able to get a couple of tickets from a family member in Columbus. And if Marshall only had 5,600 ticket for OSU and only 4,000 for VPI, then my chances are slim(and I am a season ticket holder and BG member).  But the best reason for not going to the VPI game, is the Tulane game. My wife and I are going to go and spend a couple days down in New Orleans. Which we both agreed is a little nicer that Blacksburg!
