    CHUCK LANDON

Let's call this win what it actually was.

It was the best performance by a Marshall football coaching staff in nine years.

    Yes, nine years.

Looking for a reason for Marshall's surprisingly overwhelming 59-28 victory over East Carolina Friday before 25,177 fans at Edwards Stadium?

    It was coaching.

  • Best in nine years, I have to agree. Whenever the "had them prepared" comes out as a reason for a win, I have to wonder if that means the coaching staff did not have them prepared for the games we lost. Surely that can't be the case.

  • IMO it is Holliday's signature win in his tenure as HC. It was a must have win and he and staff trickerated, instigated, deviated and refrigerated ECU.

Indeed his chats with Bobby P may have resulted in the new Big Cheese ala the old Whopper formations....one thing for certain it worked, and the players and fans ate it up just like a trip to Burger King with charbroiled Pirate patties.

In short we all knew Holliday was an excellent recruiter, he's also rebuilt team discipline. Maybe he's finally gotten the confidence needed to step out into trickeration and strategy as well. One thing for sure, I hope he stays the course.

  • Marshall is darn tough at home. No one has come in the Joan and given us a game, including decent/good teams like UTSA and ECU. We've been competitive on the road but dominant at home.

That's why it's important to have that Championship game at the Joan!

  • What was the trickeration?  The jumbo set/ iso dive?

I saw a lot of runs for 8, 10, 24....A our WRs, TEs torching their secondary

  • I still believe the reason we struggled early at FIU last week was because we have been preparing for ECU for a while.  Just MO

  • It's in the presser Doc said we've had the jumbo set for "2 weeks" and he was saving it for ECU....

Well, those runs didn't just "happen".  If you watch closely we lined up in our typical read option, but instead ran dives inside.

We also came out in a 3-3-5 on the first series on defense on first and second down.  Carden was lost.

    The whopper formation. As mentioned.

Shuler lining up on the wide side of the field, giving him more space to get underneath.  Which put gator on the short side which is why he didn't get targeted much until the red zone.

A few others I'm spacing on right now.  I'm not sure I would call it "trickeration".  Rather, they are simply wrinkles that, when they are all added up, put ECU on its heels the entire game.

One thing is certain, this was NOT a vanilla game plan.  This was a well orchestrated beat down in all phases.  The coaches did a masterful job planning on this game.  Best I've seen since the Pruett years, by far.

Well, those runs didn't just "happen".

Runs are a result of a hat on a hat...execution and attitude...and RBs making guys miss...

If we "fooled" them the first time by running those tricky dives with Tali...What happened the next time, the time after that, that time after that, the time after that, the time after that, when Stewart Butler did it, when Bulter did it again and so on and so forth...

If we lined up jumbo and handed the ball to the tailback...he ran directly behind his lead block....The lead blocker runs straight forward....

I think Stevie Wonder knew who was getting the ball and where he was going....

But, it was a good gameplan, but we didn't outscheme them, we out "athleted" them, that's the way I saw it...I could be wrong...

  • Landon is correct. It was coaching. Plain and simple. Yes the players have to execute.
Here's a possibility that I haven't seen mentioned....Players can develop swagger, but so can coaches. If doc is developing swagger as a coach, that will cause huge problems for other teams, and lots of fun for us.

  • Outstanding plan and coaching. Outstanding execution. Best I remember in years. This is what we all have been waiting for.

    Agree 100%.
