  • Alright, I said I didn't care enough to come over here and see what you guys urn this into to get it moved to the smack board, but I couldn't resist.  Some of you ask how it pertains to MU.  We have a gay player on our team, so I thought it could be kind of herd related.  I'm not going to out him, and he is enough of a man to not use it to get a handout or advantage, or in any way make his team mates uncomfortable.

If I was tired of hearing about it, why did I make a thread about it??  Well this is a sports forum, where I come to discuss sports with friends who share a common interest in the Herd.

I knew many others on the board were watching the draft in holes that stator may be drafted as I was, and I was growing really tired of 10 minute soap opera segments on the athlete who also happens to be gay.  I made it clear above that I felt he shouldn't be looked at as any more than an athlete, and his personal business has no place on ESPN or in the analysis of his draft stock.

I believe it is actually against the law to ask for someone sexuality on an employment alplication, or to take their sexuality into consideration when evaluating them for the job or comparing them with their peers who have similar qualifications. So, if all of that is true, then I feel very strongly that his sexuality shouldn't have had anything to do with his evaluations or draft stock, or should have in any way been a part of the show.  I feel very strongly that he should just be looked at equally, and received no more or no less coverage than say a Gator Hoskins or any other 7th round pick or undrafted college athlete.

Given as it has gotten so much attention, and m feeling that the goal of the gay community is openly that they just want equal opportunities, I feel that broadcasting if everywhere and making it news does the exact opposite of what their supposed goals are.

Now, why I posted the thread.  Since It had been shoved down our throats on the sports related media coverage, I thought I would mention how much I wish it wasn't an issue on the sports related forum of which I frequent, and see if my peers who share common interests with me shared my opinions, so I came here to find out.

I can see that the overwhelming majority of posters did share my feelings that indeed he should only be looked at as an absolutely great defensive player, and get likely was deserving of a 6th to 7th round pick or to get a FA contract.  That in no way justifies all of the media coverage he got.  Name me 3 other players who were drafted in the 6th or 7th round quick.  Exactly , you can't, because none of them got any media hype or publicity because they aren't Johnny Manziel or Jadeveon Clowney and weren't deserving of a 10 minute segment on ESPn.  Neither was Michael Sam.  I found that it seems 2 to 3 posters became upset about the thread, and I feel there is probably a pretty good chance, while they won't admit it, the reason our opinions upsets them is because the goal of the group sharing his sexual orientation isn't to be looked at as an athlete that also happens to be gay.  More of them than not want him to be looked at as  a gay athlete and to receive special treatment/ ie a handout, just like most other gays who aren't extremely hard working and great at what they do.  They sat to be recognized and given opportunities because they are a gay ________, and not a ______ that also happens to be gay.

I think Michael Sam really is unbelievably hard working, and really is a great athlete that also happens to be gay, and wants to be looked at that way and doesn't want to receive a handout or something for nothing.  He doesn't seem like the type to me that would want this circus surrounding himself.  However, that little white gold digger there right beside him, kissing him, who probably isn't a hard worker, or good at absolutely anything other than Being Michael Sam's boyfriend, very likely influenced him and convinced him to create this circus mostly so that he can spend his money and enjoy all of the publicity himself.  If I had to guess just like many other athletes, Michaek Sam is listening to much to the people marlins him, who only want something from him rather than what is best for him, and this circus is probably going to prevent him from getting a contract and be his one way ticket to playing football in the arena league or in Canada, if he can even get on a team there after all of that nonsense that he performed on TV.

How many straight guys did you see repetitively kissing their girlfriends, or eating cake off of their girlfriends TV on national TV???  ZERO, and their is a reason for that.  It is unprofessional.  The NFL isn't a reality show or the Gay bachelor, it is a business and a job that Kay's very well, and its employees are to carry themselves in a professional manner.  That was anything bit professional.

I personally don't want to see anyone making cake or eating cake off of each others faces on ESPN, not even the 2 hottest NFL cheerleaders.  If I want to we that I will get online and google it.

  • Was it not news when Jackie Robinson signed with the Dodgers?  Because this isn't all that different.

Now ESPN, specifically, certainly is guilty of beating a horse until well after it's dead.  They're doing the same thing with the Sam story, but can you really blame them?  Whether or not he was drafted was far more interesting to the average fan than guys nobody has heard of getting drafted in a spot where they're more likely to get cut than make a roster.

Despite ESPN's oversaturation of just about everything, this is a legitimately newsworthy story that matters to a lot of people. And it's one that's far more interesting than who would be drafted with the 247th pick.

I also don't remember anybody complaining about this...

  • Excellent post.

Thanks. I bit my tongue for 24 hours until finally I couldn't resist.  Stuff like this shouldn't be brought up on the main board. There's places you can go to get into debates of this nature.
