HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women’s basketball coach Matt Daniel has signed 5-foot-7 guard Maikala McCloud (Miami), the Thundering Herd’s first recruit for the 2014-15 season.

 “We are excited to add Maikala to our roster,” Daniel said. “She has the build and talent to be a great combo guard for us moving forward.”

McCloud comes to Huntington from American Senior High school in Miami, where she averaged 19.8 points, four rebounds and two steals per game. She is a two-time all-conference first team selection, and was the top 3-point shooter in the state (42 percent) during her senior season. She also was part of two state runner-up teams during her high school career.

“She has already committed to being here all summer to prepare herself to try and contribute in her first year,” Daniel said. “That is the type of commitment to our program that we are looking for as we continue to build a culture that our university and community can be proud of.”

In addition to her basketball achievements, McCloud earned a 3.2 grade point average in high school and was involved in drama club. She expects to major in biology at Marshall.

McCloud is the niece of George McCloud, who played in the NBA from 1989-2002. After a four-year college career at Florida State, George was named Metro Conference Player of the Year and was selected seventh overall by the Indiana Pacers in the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft.

Including the Pacers, George played for the Dallas Mavericks, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns and Denver Nuggets during his 13-year NBA career. During the 1995-96 season as a member of the Mavericks, George set the NBA record for most 3-point attempts in a season.
