CHARLESTON, W.Va.--  Marshall baseball opened its final home series of the season facing Old Dominion Friday afternoon. The Herd fell 6-3 and dropped to 20-26 on the season.

Redshirt sophomore Robert Fajardo (Miami) put up a 3-for-4 day with a double.

Junior Eric Escobedo (Troup, Ga.) extended his hitting streak to 12 games after belting a two RBI triple to deep left in the second inning to put Marshall on the board. Junior Andrew Dundon recorded a 2-for-3 day with a run.

Junior TJ Diffenderfer had a 2-for-2 day at the plate with a run, and freshman Corey Bird (Elkview, W.Va.) extended his on-base streak to 14 games with a hit in the second inning.

Old Dominion attacked first, scoring four runs in the second inning off five hits to take the early 4-0 lead.

With ground to make up, Marshall started the second inning with Diffenderfer singling up the middle. He advanced to third on a single over the third baseman’s head from Dundon.

Escobedo then knocked his ball to deep left to hit his first triple of the season and score Diffenderfer and Dundon.

A single from Bird then brought Escobedo home to bring the Herd within one.

The Monarchs plated two in the top of the fifth  inning off four hits to increase its lead to 6-3.

The Herd saw an opportunity in the seventh, when designated hitter Chase Vogelbach (Ft. Myers, Fla.) doubled down the right field line and Fajardo singled to advance him.

Sophomore Aaron Bossi (St. Louis, Mo.) singled up the middle to move the runners, but a cannon throw from ODU’s center fielder Connor Myers to home ended the inning and left the score 6-3.
Marshall will return to Appalachian Power Park for a Saturday game under the lights with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
