  • Wiliam "Bill" Maynard passed away yesterday from a heart attack. Bill and I roomed together at Marshall. He lived and breathed Marshall for 50 years and held season tickets in FB and BB for 45+ years. When Marshall was in the SC and MAC we both attended virtually all home and away games. We didn't travel together He lived in Huntington and I live in Kettering, Ohio,
but we met each other at the games. We talked by phone often. He called me to tell me about the DD appt before I had heard.

To give you an example of Bill's devotion to Marshall, after he retired he attended all the BB and FB practices - he saw every FB practice this past spring.

What a great friend. What a great HERD fan. What a great Christian gentleman.

  • I have set and talked with Mr. Maynard many times at football practice.  Great guy and nobody on this board was more green blooded than him.  He will be missed.

  • Bill was my roommate as well, a true "gentle giant" and an unbelievable Herd fan. jstherd described his devotion well, he could hardly contain his excitement about this coming year. A huge loss for Marshall University, rest in peace my friend.

  • I became friends with Bill many years ago during the Stu Aberdeen years.  He was a great guy and a tremendous fan.  Just recently we had rekindled our friendship and were  looking forward to many practices and games together.  A very sad day indeed.  My thoughts and prayer go out to the family.  I believe Bill's viewing will be at Chapman's on Friday evening from 6 to 8. :'(

  • Rest in peace Bill. You're in Herd Heaven now with a lot of good people, including my father. I'm going home someday. Please leave the light on.

  • Bummer. I would give a lot if we could have just 30000 like Bill. All green koolaid. No back seat driving. Thoughts for the family.

  •    Bill Maynard was one of the most sincere, honest gentlemen I have ever met. For those of you that may not know, Bill played football for the Herd back in the mid 50's. This past December, me and some of my closest friends took Bill along with us to watch the Herd beat Maryland in the Military Bowl. We had the time of our lives in large part by having Bill accompany us on that road trip. The stories and laughter that we all shared on that special trip will never be forgotten. Not seeing Bill at the practices anymore will be difficult as well. God Bless you Bill. You will always be remembered.

  • Great post Marshall steve. Bill told me all about that trip to the Military Bowl. He was a man of faith - never wavering. A fantastic role model. I'll miss him as a Marshal fan, but I'll miss him more as a 60 year friend.

  • Bill sounds like a great guy.  It sounds like y'all were very lucky to have him as a friend.  Good friends are hard to come by.  Was he a herdfans.com member?

  • Bill was on the message boards but told us he would rarely post. We never knew his handle, but one can be assured he would never be involved in the food fights most of us engage in from time to time. His wife told me an interesting story which spoke to the trust people had in Bill. As we know some practices were closed to the public ,but Doc never closed any practice to Bill, he knew Bill would never divulge information he was told to keep to himself. jstherd and I were early arrivals to MU football games, but I can't remember ever beating Bill to the stadium, we would come through the tunnel look up and see Bill waiting and watching.
