  • Amidst the high expectations and ultimate disappointment of the 2004 season, we can still recall the highlight reel that was #50 that season...the TD's vs. OSU/OU, the four-sack pack against Miami, and others, capped by AP first-team All-American status (I still recall interrupting Christmas dinner to watch the ABC halftime show on the AP selections)...all of this came to mind while I was considering the Rams' selection of Michael Sam and how their circumstances are remarkably similar...decorated college all stars with high-rev motors who are/were regarded as "tweeners"--men without positions, drafted in the 7th round almost as afterthoughts...it will be interesting to see if Sam fares better than JG in finding a niche in the NFL...BTW...this is strictly a football topic, okay???...(there's a great highlight package on YouTube under "Johnathan Goddard #50 Marshall University")...

  • I don't think Goddard was through at the time of his death.  I think he would have eventually gotten it figured out. He was a rare individual.

  • I felt I just had to buy that autographed football on HN to honor him. Best $500 I ever spent.

    G'dam 2-wheeled death traps. But, I digress.

  • One thing I will always remember about Jon.  We did a fundraiser football camp in 2004 where a lot of guys like me paid to wear pads, do drills and run around with the coaching staff. It paid bonuses to Pruett's assistants. Goddard came down and showed us how to run drills.  Best of all, during our "scrimmage" he brought down several players and tailgated before it.

I used to make football cards of Marshall players which I would get them to sign and keep in my collection.  He would always say in the shy, big voice,"Can you make an extra one of these for my momma?"

I loved the guy, the engine, and the passion. He was a true son of Marshall.

  • I was young and playing Middle School football when Jon was at Marshall. I played DE and told myself every single day that I was going to be like him. As far as sports go, he was the first person I ever really looked up to. While all of my friends wanted to be "like Mike" I was busy busting ass to be like Jon.
