    HOUSTON, Tx.-Elaine Derricott and Catika Slay finished in third and fourth, respectively, Friday in the heptathlon to power Marshall to first place after the first event of competition at the Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The event is being held on the campus of Rice University.

    Derricott finished with 4,977 points, while Slay had 4,858, just behind Jallycia Pearson of UTEP (5,576) and Akira McSwain of UAB (4,988). Derricott's finish netted six team points for Marshall, while Slay registered five. The Herd's 11-point total tops the league, while UTEP has 10, followed by UAB (8), East Carolina (5), Charlotte (4), Middle Tennessee (1).

    Slay won the event's long jump competition on Friday, with a leap of 5.78 meters and Derricott followed with a sixth-place finish (5.48).

    The duo finished in consecutive spots in the javelin, with Derricott notching a fifth-place finish (30.21 meters), followed by Slay's sixth-place mark of 27.48 meters.

    The last event of the heptathlon was the 800 meters and the two, once again, finished together. Derricott completed the event in eighth place (2:33.19), followed by Slay just seven seconds behind in ninth (2:33.26).

    The third day of the championship's competition will begin Saturday at 4 p.m. ET/3 p.m. CT with the long jump.
